Confused, when do you see a baby heartbeat???

When do you see the babys heartbeat??? My friend found out she was pregnant last night.. Her last period was 2/28/11... She went to the dr today and they said they saw a fetal pole but no heart beat... She would only be 4wks 1 day. Why would they say it may or not be a valable pregnancy?? She is soo confused

Updated info: she had her appt today and they said the fetal pole is gone so they gave her 2options repeat the steps or I guess get a dnc...

I had a scan at 4 weeks and all they could see was a pregnancy sac.  My next scan at 6 weeks I could see a heartbeat but the sonographer could not pick up the sound of the heartbeat as it was too faint.  He said this was normal for the timing of the pregnancy.

I cant think of any reason why they would say it is not a viable pregnancy but they may not have given her all the details of what they saw on the scan.

I guess she'll see on Tuesday... The dr sound so sure you can see it nxt wk... So godwilling this is a successful pregnancy for her!! Thank you guys for the replies

4 weeks is typically too early to see anything. I didnt see the heartbeat until 5 weeks 5 days and hear it until 10 weeks

i was with her and i asked will it be too early to see it next wk.. and the dr said they woukd be able to see something.. idk, but thank you, ill be sure to tell my friend you guys reponse and advise her not to stress and just pray on it

I got an ultrasound at 5w6d and only saw the sac and fetal pole. Got another ultrasound at 6w1d and there was a heart beating away. It is WAY too early for her to see it yet.

I'm shocked they even saw a fetal pole at 4 weeks. It's not surprising they didn't see the heartbeat. The earliest I've heard it seen is around 5 weeks. I personally saw my daughters at 7 weeks 3 days. Tell her to wait a week or two and make another appointment for a scan. A few days can make a huge difference in early pregnancy and by then she should see it.
