Constipation in babies-OT

Ok, I need help please. Kylie has been SUPER constipated lately, and whenever she has a bowel movement she screams, cries, and pushes really hard. She gets super red faced and is in agony. There's also never really anything there when she DOES actually try to go. We've tried switching formula (4 times with no luck), pear juice, actual pears, apple juice, prunes, rubbing her belly, rotating her legs and nothing is working. So we decided tonight to get Karo syrup (dark) to see if that helps. Only problem is that I have no idea how to give this to her, or how much. Can anyone tell how to give it to her, or maybe how much? I really don't need a lecture now that I shouldn't use it--my baby girl is in too much pain and it's been going on for 3 weeks now.

Haha, I know. I was telling Phil earlier than I was prepared for sleepness nights, and dirty diapers and lack of sleep. It definitely wasn't in the job description that I would have to clean her out like that. It was kinda funny thinking about it. I can do that, but I can't handle vomit AT ALL. I hate to be sick, I hate to clean it up, I hate to hear it, smell it or even think of it. Weird.

I'm telling ya, if ya haven't tried the suppositories...they work great.

I used them on Lily when she was only a week old...she wasn't gruntin and groaning and hadn't gone in several days.  With a few hours she let it ALL loose LOL..

Anyway, just keep plain vaseline or lanolin on her rectum.  Not necessarily diaper cream.  She doesn't have a rash, really all you want is a barrier between the urine and the torn skin.  You can also use CORN STARCH powder or plain corn starch (like you find in the baking section) on top of the vaseline/lanolin.  This helps to neutralize the acidity in the urine so it helps to reduce the burn.  I RARELY use diaper creams unless it's something for yeast or bacteria.  I ALWAYS use what I just described.  Works great.  Oh and don't use the JAR vaseline- that stuff is sticky and nasty and hard to get off. They sell squeeze tubes of it and it's a different consistency, SO much easier to get off.  No butt scrubbing involved LOL.

Another thing ...lay her flat (make sure there's a changing pad under her) and open her diaper.  Grab her legs but the lower part and gently move them outwards (like spreading them apart) and then up and into her abdomen, using her legs to apply gental pressure from both sides.  This is a good trick as well.

When DD14 was a baby she had horrible constipation problems.  Her ped determined that her anus was too small so we had to do stretching excercises.  A few times a day we had to put on a glove and use vaseline to insert just the tip of a pinky finger in and hold it for a few seconds.  The things we do when we become parents!!!!!

Thank you, we hadn't. I don't have any experience with any of that, nor does anyone in my or Phil's family. She's having a little more trouble going again, so we'll see what happens as the night goes on. We might end up back at Children's.

OH just in case you haven't thought of this...try to keep some vaseline or lanolin on her rectum where the capillaries are broken.  They may burn when she urinates :)

Yup. I think we got it. I spent 45 minutes digging her out and finally got it all. My poor baby. She has what looks like broken capillaries around her rectum and it's all super red. I have to say, that's one of the nastiest things I've ever done. Luckily she's much happier now. She's smiling and finally eating again.

Poor Baby!!! Those glycerin suppositories really do help with easing the pain.  Not only do they stimulate the bowels to move, but the glycerin sort of coats things so it slides out easier.  Have you tried doing the bicycle movements with her legs?

Well....kinda. It's worse, but better. She's finally got it down lower and is trying hard to push it out. She was waking every 2 hours screaming with the pain of it. We also took her to children's last night and the doctor gave her some stuff to help.

Right now, she's really close to passing it but can't. It seems too large, so Children's told us to take a thermometer and break it up and see if that helps. I feel so so bad for her. She's exhausted, and in agony. It reminds me strongly of labour, lol.

The pediatric ones are usually in the same area as the pediatric laxatives.  They say not for children under 2, but they are NOT medicated.  It's simply glycerin.  My ped is the one who recommended them for me.  They are the same as the adult ones only smaller.  I get them at walmart.

Where can I get these? I looked in the store, but I couldn't find anything for children under 2. She doesn't see her doctor till the 27th, but I hate to let her wait that much longer if this doesn't work.

1 tsp of dark karo in her bottle.  I wouldn't do it more than twice a day.  But it usually works pretty good.  Another thing that will help, both with making her go and easing the pain for her is pediatric glycerin suppositories.  They are completely none medicated and easy to use.  Just slide one in (make sure your hand is clean of course or wear a glove) until it's fully inside the rectum then pinch her butt cheeks together for a few months (not hard of course) so that it will slide in good and start to dissolve.
