I had three stitches with my daughter but i also had an epidural.  I felt some of it but was more interested in what they were doing with her to notice.  But, both of my kids were exremely alert with the epidural.  My nurse with my son told me they actually recommend them because it makes you more relaxed as well as the baby.

My dr said it would take to long to have the numbing meds work and if you need two or three stiches it's faster to just do it then be poked n numbed n e ways! I did feel everything and not all drs use numbing meds to help. It's an awful experience and can relate to whatever horror film they need stiches in with nothing to help the pain. I will always ask for an epidural. N I've heard the opposite that ripping naturally is better then being cut. A straight line doesn't heal as strong as the ridged natural cut of your body

With my first child, I did rip,not a tiny little rip, but they actually needed a plastic surgeon to fix me.  I had both of my children natural so i felt everything.  when it came time to stitch me up, they did put a local in and i was more worried about the needle poking me somewhere where it should never go then the actual stitches themselves. haha.

I am also sure that if you do rip and you need stitches, you can ask for the local, i don't think they would refuse...

I went natural I did tear and had to get stitched. The doctor put lidocaine for numbing it but I could still feel it and kept asking for more of the medicine. But going through it was all worth to have such a healthy, alert baby being born getting stitched up didn't matter. I think I tore because the doctor told me to stop pushing and I kinda ignored the fact lol. Also I've been reading about tears and it says lying on your back giving birth can cause tearing. I'm on baby number 2 so planning to do it natural again (don't like needles so epidurals aren't an option for me).

I heard its a standard for them to cut now, or so I heard. I rather b cut than rip ouch. I heard its better to get cut for the healing process. Power to u mamas that go natural whew I cant imagine.

I went into labor two months early and had a natural birth and still ripped, my Dr put a local on before stitching me up I didn't feel it but I was very scarred for my son, he is a happy 19 month old now and we are expecting #2

I plan on giving natural birth and I never thought about this question. Thanks for asking it Rie1990. The comment about being able to feel the string going through you kind of freaked me out :( Hopefully they will numb it before they do.

I felt it! It was traumatizing I could feel the fish hook needle and the string! I got an epidural the second time and was numb so it didn't matter!

I didn't tear on all three of mine, they anticipated I would so they did an episiotomy(sp?) All three times.  I didn't know they cut me but when they sewed me up they did use numbing meds before they did so I didn't feel it either way.
