Daiper Rash at only 11 days old :(

I am so upset my little baby boy is only 11 days old and has the worst diaper rash. I called his peditrition ( whom of which he hasnt seen yet) and he told me to wash him down there with Leaver 2000 and use a mixture of Neosporen and vasalene and he perscribed him a cream called Nystatin 30GM. Is anyone farmiliar with that cream? I am just really skepcital about using a perscription on a newborn espically when the peditrition has not even seen him yet. Maybe I am paranoid... Any thoughts?

Also is it normal for his diaper rash to be bleeding. I know its not normal but is it common?

oh, and the wipes you are using may be a contributing factor as they has preservatives in them to keep them wet...try using a wet cloth.

I don;t have time to read all the comments here, but vasiline is a petro product and lever 2000 has so many uneccessary chemicals in it...SLS and Parabens....
The desposible diapers are probably causing the rash as they contain a number of chemicals for absorbancy....Try to switch to cloth diapers and use light olive oil to sooth baby's bottom.
best of luck

if you're breast feeding this is what is probably giving your little guy his rash. and the constant wiping of his skin from poopy diapers make his skin raw. Like the poster earlier said change the diaper every hour to hour and a half and if he poopy's dont use wipes use water to cleanse and use your hands to wash away the poop. and make sure to use cream or vasaline everytime but before you put the diaper, make sure the area is completely dry. The doc may think the baby has a yeast infection that's causing this severe rash. That's the reason behind his RX. But if you try all the natural ways we've said and it works than the baby has no yeast. but if he still doesnt improve it may very well be the yeast. Good luck and let us know how he fairs.

I use a cream called Bepanthen. It works wonders.

Anything containing Lanolin will help heal and soothe.

Another option would be to leave the diaper off of him for a few hours at a time.  The air will really help clear up the rash.  I know it might get a little messy, but this will work better than any cream you can rub on his butt.

Also if the rash is really bad as you said, it might be less painful for him to smear the diaper with cream versus him.  You will have to use a lot more, but at least you won't be hurting him.

Another product to try that has done the trick every time with us is 1% or 1/2% hydrocortisone cream.

One more thing...

You might want to try this skin protectant called Aquaphor by Eucerin it's excellent.  It's sort of like vasaline but it's especially for irriated skin.

One last thing---the reason he may be breaking out may be because of the chemicals in the wipes and/or diapers. Pampers Sensitive wipes were a Godsend for me. Seventh Generation makes organic diapers that contain no chemicals. Or you could buy AIO (all in one) cloth diapers.

My girls' ped told me to keep switching diapers until I found one that didn't cause rashes. My oldest has very sensitive skin. She cannot use some products (like sunblock, Desitin, etc.) that contain zinc oxide.

My oldest daughter kept getting rashes and finally I did this:

Gave her a bath with baking soda (no soaps or washes). You can just have him sit in his baby tub in some water and baking soda. This will help neutralize the acids eating at his skin.

Then you rinse and pat baby dry. Only use Vaseline (Desitin and other creams have chemicals in them). And this is optional but you can carefully put a little cornstarch over the Vaseline.

The Vaseline protects the skin from urine/feces that contain acids that eat at skin. The cornstarch works like the baking soda to help neutralize those acids.

To Linzola...
The Nystatin is both a cream and an oral drop thats used for any kind of pediatric fungal infection.  Peds use it for Thrash on the baby's tongue and also for diaper rash.  Before you try it you may want to just wash his bottom off with NOTHING but water ( I wouldnt try the Lever 2000) and mix Desitin & Vasoline and keep him changed every hour on the hour whether he's wet or not.  Also wrap him in a blanket or one of his bath towels and leave his pamper off for a while and let him just air out down there.  If he uses the bathroom that's ok just keep putting the Desitin & Vasoline mix on his bottom and I gaurantee you will see a change in the next day or two.  Chancellor just had a little diaper rash and it cleared right up using that method.

It is very common for a newborns skin to chaff and break because its so sensitive.  Dont panic, just try that remedy and you'll see a change.  Oh yeah, use something on his bottom everytime you change him from here on out.

Maybe try an organic product for diaper rash relief. It will be gentle and I find organic stuff to be really effective. Burts Bees Baby Bee is a good brand to look into..
