Deppo Shot and Planning Pregnancy

Hi,

I'm 24 (almost 25) and I have been on the Deppo shot for almost 3 years.
My wonderful hubby and I are planning on starting a family in a year or two.  Just curious because I know it can take up to 18 months after going off the shot to conceive.

I'm just wondering about anyone else's experiences with something like this?  I don't want to go off the shot and be pregnant next month because we are definately not ready yet.  I guess it's like russian roulette but should I wait until I get my period back regularly to try?  Thoughts?

i was also very bad at remembering to take my pills, which is why i decided to switch to the nuva ring.  it's something you might want to look into/think about b/c you only have to worry about it once a month, but it's side effects are like that of the pill instead of depo.  also, it's been shown in some studies to have an even shorter time to return to normal periods afterwards (1-2 mo. average), than the pill (2-3 mo. average).  i loved it for its convenience & it's really stress free... you never have to worry about forgetting!

good luck!

Reading these comments have really made me feel relieved! I have been on the deppo shot since 2003. I didn't go back for my shot that was due for Feb. 19 of this year. I was getting really worried because I haven't had a period yet. But I guess I'm normal :) Thank you ladies for your advice!!

Thanks for the responses.  Gillian I was not aware of that so thank you, something I will definately talk to my doctor about once we are really really serious about starting a family.  And nikko thanks as well. :)

It is very rare for a woman coming off depo to get pregnant before 6 months. I was on depo for 8 years. I came off the shot May of 2006 and still have not concieved.

I have been on the depo for 2 and a half years, and have now been off just over 3 months.  I myself am trying to conceive but it is not happening.  Most people i have spoken to on the site haven fallen within 7 months till over 2 years.  So yes i guess it is a gamble on when to come off.  But i have also been told if you do come off of depo and go onto a pill this could regulate your period and help you quicker when your ready to start trying.  I myself haven't had a period as yet, and i get a lot of pregnancy symptoms but i'm told these happen after coming off of depo.

I wish you all the luck in whichever you choose.

Oh I am well aware of the adverse effects it has my doctor is very informed and has informed me about the issue of bone density loss while on Deppo.  Thank you for your concern :)  He did tell me that I should go off the shot soon because of that (the new research out says after about 2-3 years on it to go off to combat the possibility of what you are dealing with).  I will do so.... I'm just terrified, I've never been good at remembering to take pills (even antibiotics when I'm sick) so the shot was just the perfect alternative at the time.  I find myself ahead of the game in the fact that unlike many many women, I didn't touch birth control until I was 22, I have so many friends/family members and aquiantainces who for medical reasons and the like had to start birth control in their young teens.  I suppose I am the ultimate planner and I don't want to be left in a lurch if something happens a year before we think it should.
I wish you the best in your health and future :)

Im not sure about how long it takes after the shot to get PG, but I do know that you should never go back on the shot. I am 24 (almost 25) and I was on the shot for 7 years, and ended up with osteopenia which is one step before osteoperosis. in case you dont know what that is, it means bone density and I loss 14% of my bone mass because of the Depo shot. So please whatever you do, and if you decide you are not ready for a baby, do not go back on the shot.. do a pill or something like that instead. I have the same problems now as an elderly person and have to be carefl about my bones, which scares me because in the next two years or so i want to try for a baby and worry about my fragil bones while carrying. So good luck to you both, and sorry I could not anser your question.
