Doctors are saying not viable because of high hcg and no fetal pole....??

I went to the ER for some red spotting, which as it turns out is my cervix reacting to the Lovenox, so nothing to do with baby.  Here is the deal:  I cant tell how far along I am.  by my last AF I am almost 7 weeks, but I ovulated last so I am thinking 5 weeks 4 days ish. Here is the thing:

My HCG levels are really high. Thay have doubled like they are supposed to and as of today it is at 30,000. As I said they ARE doubling every 48 hours on schedule.

Monday of this week all they could see was a gestational sac,  as of today a gestational sac and a very very small yolk sac, no fetal pole.

The doctors are saying no fetal pole with my HCG being at 30,000 is not a viable pregnancy. There is definatly only one possible baby in there.

Please help.  I know that at 5.4 weeks it is reasonable not to see anything, but why with my levels that high is there no fetal pole? Please help, I am terrified.

well i hope all goes well today. After watch for signs of infection (which is common). and remember that this group is here for suport as well. You'll go through a lot in the next few weeks- your body plus your emotions so take care of yourself

second HCG went down, so going through with D&C today.  I do not want to wait for my body to do it on it's own.  Thanks for the support.  Hopefully in a few months I will be back and posting good news!

I'm sorry for your loss, but make sure you get another opinion before you get the d&c. If you dates were off even by a week it could change things (say if you ovulated later). I wish you strength with what you're going through

I am in a similar situation.  By dates I should have been 8 weeks yesterday.  (I took progesterone to force a period then Letrozole to induce ovulation) U/S showed the yolk sac, but only a very small fetal pole.  They told me for my dates it is not what should be seen.  No cardiac activity either.  Yesterday my HCG was over 60,000.  I am waiting to hear what it is today.  I have a D&C scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.  I have felt crampy all day today, but no bleeding.  I have symptoms of pregnancy still; sore breasts, tired etc.  Now I am confused!  I was told this is a "fetal demise".

When I go for my scan on Wednesday I will only be 5.5 weeks and they said they will be expecting to see growth of the embryos and heartbeats! I have checked this out on a number of websites and all of them agree.

If I get there and there is growth but no heartbeats I will not be disappointed because I know some people on here have said that they have not heard heart beats until 8 weeks. As long as my embryos are still sticky I will not let them do anything until I am sure.

Maybe it's because I am in the UK but they don't discuss what they can see, they just said what they saw was normal for 4.5 weeks but not for 8.5 weeks (which is what they think I am). I doubt they will point out the gestational sac, fetal pole and such.

All I know is that I found a TVUS picture on the net of twins at 4.5 weeks and it looked exactly like my picture. They had little blobs in the middle of the sacs which I was told were my babies. I looked up 5.5 weeks and that's what I will be hoping to see next.

Hang in there I went through the same thing with my son, now 2!!!  I was told at 5 weeks that they saw a yolk sac, then at 6 weeks the same thing no heartbeat, my levels were at 20,000 and I was to prepare myself for a miscarrage - then at 7 weeks there was a heartbeat!!!  I couldn't believe it.  I am pregnant again didn't have them check until 8 weeks when they saw everything.  Good luck and let us know what happens there is still hope!

Thank you so much ladies!
I appreciate your support so much, you have no idea how much I need it right now.

Brandy26-  Thank you for sharing your u/s results.  It is stories like that, that make me believe there is a baby. Especially since there is a yolk sac now, and there wasnt 4 days ago!!

I will let you ladies know what we see on Tuesday.

At 5 1/2 weeks, it's very rare to be able to see anything at that point. You should definitely be able to see a little more by 6 weeks. If they see a yolk sac at that point, but no fetus, still, do not fret. Try and get another ultrasound a week from then as it is still possible it is a viable pregnancy!!

Usually, if no fetus or heartbeat has been detected by 8 weeks, then it should be considered a non-viable pregnancy. Keep me posted!!

My levels were very high also and all they saw was small yolk sac i went back 1 week later and saw heartbeat. i guess i am just more difficult to ultrasound. I am now 16 weeks and baby is great. My beta at that time was 38,583. and this is exactly what my u/s said:

IMPRESSION
1.  Single intrauterine gestational sac with yolk sac.  At this
time the embryo and cardiac activity can not be identified and thus
a follow up obstetrical ultrasound examination is recommended.

2.  No adnexal mass or free pelvic fluid is evident.

3.  Suboptimal obstetrical ultrasound examination due to patient
body habitus and patient ultrasound imaging characteristics.

i would wait and get another US next week.  if the sac grows and a fetal pole and heartbeat are seen then that is great.  Some women don;t see the fetal pole til 7 weeks.

I believe the sac was 1.25 cm, I may be wrong. Whatever it is, the doctor said that it was measuring on target for 5 1/2 weeks. Your story is really comforting, thank you.  I keep thinking: "okay, I'm just not far enough," but then I get hung up on how high my numbers are. Thank you for your story.   I will have another u/s on Tuesday and by then I should be 6 weeks, 1 day.  I Dont think I will even let them mention D& C until I dont see anything at the end of next week, like you said.

I just refuse to beleive that my numbers are going up like they are and there is not a viable fetus, at this point I just dont believe that. There is a baby in there!

Thank you

Hun, DON'T LISTEN RIGHT NOW!!!

My levels at 6w1d were 28,583 and my levels had been tripling!!

At 6w1d all that was visible was a gestational sac. I was told with how high my levels were, I was probably having a molar pregnancy. 6w2d, there was a gestational sac and a yolk sac. Doc told me at that point, with how high my levels were and how far along I was, my pregnancy wasn't viable and I should schedule a D&C. 6w3d..gestational sac, yolk sac and tiny fetus with a heartbeat of 102bpm was seen. By 6w6d, it picked up to 122bpm. 8w4d, it was 162bpm. I'll be 10 weeks tomorrow.

How big was the gestational sac measuring on the ultrasound? If it only measures to be about 5 weeks, chances are, you're not going to see anything. As I explained, I didn't see anything until 6w3d. Wait another week or so and ask for another ultrasound. If the sac still shows to be empty, then I would have to agree with the doctor and say it's not viable. But right now, there is still a HUGE chance it is viable.
