Dominant Genes. . . .

Hey everyone just being nosey really lol, ive been reading up on genes and which genes are more dominant etc which has got me really baffled, it claims dark genes are usually most dominant, eg brown eyes will dominate over blue, green, grey etc and the same with dark hair, I have dark hair and my partner has red hair (although he has none lol) he has 2 daughters to his previous wife (she has black hair brown eyes) yet his daughters both have red hair one blue eyes one brown eyes! so it just makes me think its all just random lol anyone else found that dark genes aren't always dominant? me and my partner are extremely competitive lol . . . . . Im sure our genes are at war ha ha ha xx

& to confuse u even more - my great niece has dark hair & deep brown eyes, her baby's father is very blond with very blue eyes. Their son has light brown hair & grey eyes. Lol alleles that make up genetics are very funny

Its possible but its really hard to tell gene combinations seeing at there are quiet a few factors involved. See my mom has a dark brown hair and blue eyes. My dad has black hair & green eyes. My brothers and I are a mash of genes all the way around. I have red hair (like my mom's mother) and blue eyes. One of my brothers has very very dark brown hair with hazel eyes, and my other brother has light brown hair and oddly enough his eyes are usually blueish in color but have been known to occasionally turn green & even brown.

My kid brother and I look almost like twins, it's as if you mix my parents together 50-50 and we're the result. But my older brother looked like neither. I used to tell him he was the milkman's child lol, but when he was 16 or 17, we found a picture of my paternal grandfather when he was a teenager...it was eerie how alike they looked. I agree, you never really know where from the family tree they're going to get their looks, but it's a fun argument. :)

It really is a mixture. From what I remember in biology the idea that it comes from both sides of the family makes a big impact. For example, my husband and I both have hazel eyes so I believe that would be our dominant gene, but both of our fathers have blue eyes, so the fact that we both carry that as a recessive gene gave us a 1 in 4 chance that our kid would have blue eyes. Our first daughter ended up with blue eyes, lucky her and we will see what our next daughters eye color ends up being. But I believe if only my father had blue eyes then our chance of having blue eyes would be zero?
It is always interesting to see what happens, makes it exciting when baby shows up to see how they look like. My daugher is almost 2.5 and we are still waiting to see what she is going to end up looking like. Her hair has changes from dark to lighter, her eyes stayed blue and her facial features are slowly changing as she grows up.

Me and my partner both have dark hair and eyes however our daughter has blue eyes and dark hair.. my nan had blue eyes and my partners mum and brother does also ... I don't think there is anyway of being 100% certain as I was adament her eyes would be dark! Enjoy having lots of fun debating how they're going to look I'm sure you won't be disappointed either way xx

It is exciting...my ex and I are already debating over whose forehead and nose she has, just based on 2-D ultrasound pics lol. He says family's genes are strong, but I tell him mine are too, so we'll just see who wins the genetic battle. Just can't wait til she's born and we can catalog all her features.

My husband has red hair, blue eyes, and very pale skin. I have dirty blonde hair, dark brown eyes, and pale skin with freckles. We have 2 daughters, the oldest has blonde hair, dark brown eyes and pale skin. The littlest one has strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes, and very pale skin. I'm kind of hopeing our third baby girl will inherit my grandmothers green eyes so we have one of each.

If you remember your eighth-grade biology class... :)

If both parents are carriers of a recessive gene (for instance, red hair), which your husband obviously is (in order to be red-headed he'd have to be) and that trait is somewhere in your genetics as well, your child has a 25% chance of being born a red-head, and a 75% chance of being born with dark hair. Remember those little boxes we used to fill out?

If you've ever taken statistics, you'd also know that they are independent probabilities, meaning it doesn't matter whether child #1 has it, child #2 has the exact same chances, 25%. He and his ex-wife both obviously carry the trait, if you don't you two will have a 0% chance of having a red-haired child, but if you do you two have the same 25% chance of having a red-head. It's likely your child will be born with darker hair, since darker traits tend to be "dominant"...not that they automatically trump darker, but because it's a recessive gene it's less likely to show up in the genetic war.

I spent some time refreshing my memory on this because my child's father is color-blind, I've never been a math or science genius but I'm pretty sure this is how this works.

Red is an extrememly recessive trait. You have to have 2 red headed genes thrown to get a red headed child. I have red hair and my husband has dark brown but his grandma has red. We have a red headed daughter. Because we both carried the gene. My husband and I both have green eyes but my sister has blue eyes and his brother has blue eyes and strangely enough despite the fact that neither of us has blue eyes my daughter does. You just have to carry the genes and have them match.

So i keep wondering what our girl will look like.

Oh man my boyfriend and I are COMPLETELY different, then again we are an inter racial couple.  I have blonde hair, blue eyes, with VERY fair skin and he is completely middle eastern, dark tan skin, black hair, and dark brown eyes, lol we could not be more opposite.  So it should be interesting to see what our baby will look like.
I've heard mixed babies are usually very attractive though, here's hoping!

********* explained it best.

I and my husband both have blue eyes, both our daughters have blue eyes, and our third will as well.  My dad has blue eyes, my mom brown.  I automatically got a blue eye gene from dad, and I also got one from mom, rather than her brown eye gene.  Both my daughters have blond hair, but my third could end up with very dark hair, my husband's is brown and his mother's is black.  You only need one dominant gene to show that feature, but 2 recessives, one from each parent, to show a recessive trait.

Dark genes do dominate over light ones. I'll give an exemple, To have blue eyes you need to have two blue genes...and if you have one brown gene and one blue gene, then your going to have brown eyes...

Say you have blue eyes, you have blue blue, your husband has brown eyes but his lets say father has blue eyes (meaning his father has to have 2 blue genes) and his mother has brown eyes, then it means your husband would have one blue, one brown gene....so if your baby takes the blue gene from him, you have two blue so he has to take a blue...he will have blue eyes...but if he takes the brown gene from your husband then automatically will have brown eyes.... I took so many science classes in university and genetics were my favorite part !

Sorry so long to explain, would have been easier to do in french :)

I am a red head with green eyes and extremely pale skin and my boyfriend is Samoan.  So he has dark hair eyes and skin.  I am crossing my fingers our baby does not have red hair I have always hated it.  My brother and I are the only ones with red hair everyone else has brown or black.

wow thanks! :-) its strange isn't it and so interesting, i thought if one was more dominant it would show up every time for example if blue eyes is more dominant wouldn't both his children have blue eyes because it would always win? if you know what i mean? its so confusing . . . . . my grandparents both had dark hair and blue eyes, my mum has dark hair and blue eyes but my auntie (my mums sister) has dark hair and green eyes! Im getting myself all confused with this lol its so complicated! xx

I have dark hair and brown eyes and my husband is blonde with blue eyes, my eldest daughter has brown eyes and light brown hair but my younger 2 have dark blonde hair and green eyes so I think the younger 2 truly are a mix of both of our genes where my eldest slightly favours mine!

Actually...i took anatomy in college...and there are certain dominant genes...blue eyes are def dominant over brown...and red hair is a very dominant gene as well...there was a whole chapter on this and it was really neat...all i can really say w/out whipping out the old college text book is...saying dark genes are dominant is false...lol. Good luck in your genetic war!!! :)

ps. my family and i (parents, brother, sister) we all have drk brown
