Has anyone decided to keep the baby cord? If so, have u ever had to use it for ur child ?

There is so much hype about keeping the cord for later use in case my child gets diagnosed with some kind of disease or generic disorder!
Any of you ever considered keeping it and if so , how much did it cost you and have u ever had to use it ??

Wow, I did it and it was not that expensive! We paid 1,100 dollars and a $125 annual fee.  We got a certificate after all the proceedures were done, informing us how many cells they got and all that.

I believe in all stem cells can do,  and despite I would hate to have a situation that made me have to use it, Its a peace of mind..

mmm just reading some of the other replies, we only paid $1800 for 10 yrs worth of banking. After the 10 yrs they will send us info to decide if we want to continue. The reason for the 10 yr thing is b/c they as of yet have not stored it past that mark so they dont know forsure if they can...in all likely hood they can its frozen but they want to research that before hand.
Honestly no matter how you look at it, its pricey but in the long run if it saved your kids life it would be worth it, we thought of it as insurance. We pay for car insurance, and life insurance here in canada and those items can cost a heck of alot more so it really depends on how you look at it, and honestly with the payment plan it make things a lot easier.

Yes we kept the cord blood for our daughter and plan to do the same with this baby. We are in canada so pricing may be different but the place that saved ours had a payment plan so we opted for that since we had just forked out money for baby furniture. It was paid off a few months after her birth as we started the payments before she was born. I would take a good look at all the blood banks in your area as its alot easer if you dont have to ship it somewhere and b/c there are so many in the states I would take recommendations and really research pricing and time frames.

I am hoping to do cord blood banking because I have a rare arthritic condition that can be passed on to my child. Cord blood banking could possibly used for me or for my child if they have this condition too. My condition is such that my spine is fusing together and could leave me in a wheelchair so if it is possible to keep me and or my child from experiencing that and all the horrible physical pain that goes with it than $2,500 seems like not much. My rx costs are approx $1,000 per month (thank goodness for insurance). So it really depends upon your situation, financially, health wise and your family's health history.

cord blood banking is expensive. I looked into it just for the hell of it. WIth most companies, you have to put down about $2-3000 then pay a monthly storage fee on top of that. That fee can vary between $50-100/mo ... That's way out of my budget. It's too expensive for me...

I've been looking into it, depending on what company you look at to do it, its usually around $2,500. And alot of times, if the child that the cord blood comes from is the one that gets a disease/some kind of disorder, they dont want to use the cord blood that was saved from the same child as depending on the problem it could have the same problem. I would talk to your doctor about it. They will have more information and also websites for the really popular companies that do it like viacord have alot of information on their website and usually have phone numbers to call that you can ask questions. also, everyone i looked at has a payment plan option to pay monthly etc since around 3 grand is alot to pay at once lol.

Oh yeah, most of the time, if one of your kids has a disease/disorder the best cord blood to use is from a sibling as they have the best chance for a match. So if your planning on having more kids or already do, it would still be a really good idea. Just my opinion, sorry i couldnt of answered all of your questions, But i'm interested to see what everyone says as well since i'm also interested in doing it. Goodluck and thanks for posting! =]
