Has anyone...

Hi has anyone have asthma & taken their asthma medicine while pregnant?? & did your baby come out fine? Someone told me that they knew sum1 & her baby came out with birth defects & she thinks it's cuz her asthma medicine she was taking which was her inhaler. So I'm a lil freaked out about taking my inhaler but I NEED to cuz if I can't breath my baby can't breath. I just don't want to take it to often. & this asthma specialist said he was going to put me on something else that has steroids in it that I inhale once a day so I won't have to take my albetirol inhaler as much. PLS. HELP ME OUT!!! Thanks

Thank you ALL for the replies :) I appreciate it ALOT. I wish I remembered that other one he was going to prescribe to me but I go back in a month to see how often I'm needing my albuterol. All I know is he said it's a steroid form I'd inhale once a day! I also heard from sum1 that there baby had a birth defect & she thinks it's cause of her inhaler she was taking thru out pregnancy but this was like 15yrs ago! I'm sure lots of things have changed.

The other thing that you inhale once per day is most likely Advair or an equivelant.  I've heard bad things abuot that.  I actually used Advair for a little while but it never helped me, I still used my inhaler just as often.  I would do research on whatever drug he is refering to before you take it.  I've only ever needed/used my two inhalers...my flovent twice daily and albuterol as needed.

I have used my albuterol and flovent inhalers in all but ONE of my pregnancies and my kids are fine.  I did not take any oral medications though.

I was told not to use mine because it causes birth defects and to try and use steam or take a hot shower when it felt like it was getting bad

I was told the steriod I was on would be safe while pregnant but I didn't want to take any risk so I did end up needing the albuterol inhaler more. I took it at least once a day sometimes more depending on if I was around smoke or up moving a lot. This pregnancy I've had to take my albuterol everytime I walk outside and I still take it every morning when I wake up. If you do not want to take the steriod you could end up needing your other inhaler more since it does get harder to breathe throughout pregnancy. My son is completely healthy and so far this baby seems to be the same. I've had friends that were prescribed albuterol only while pregnant there babies came out healthy too. I understand your concern as I did have the same concerns first go around. I would say do what you are comfortable with just make sure you are breathing easily so your baby gets enough oxygen. hope this helps.

the_other_half I had a Dr. Appt. Yesterday & asked her about it but she said it was safe. I am so worried about having the Dr. Prescribe me the other inhaler which is 1 I would take everyday once a day & that 1 has a steroid medicine. Something like that. Anyways so you used ur albuterol inhaler once a day when you where pregnant??

I do not have severe asthma it's exercise induced but certain things trigger mine to make it severe. Before getting pregnant with my first son I was on two inhalers albuterol as needed and once a day I took a pulmicort inhaler(steriod). When I found out I was pregnant I did get off the pulmicort but stayed on the albuterol(only needed it once or twice a day). My son came out healthy and is now a healthy 4yr old. I am now 36weeks with my second son and I've had to take my albuterol inhaler anytime I go outside due to fires around where I live. So far ultrasounds say my little man is still healthy. I was never advised by my ob/gyn to not take the albuterol. In my opinion even if there is a risk using albuterol it wouldn't be a big one or OB's would not allow so many pregnant women to use them. Also the risk of not using it could be so much worse. It is important that you are able to breathe so your baby develops properly. You should ask your Ob about the steriod for sure. hope this helped.

Thank you SunWorshiper_26 that makes me feel a little better. Did you use any other inhaler!? That had some kind of steroid in it to help control your asthma better tho? & how often did you use your albuterol inhaler?

Everyone says they know someone who knows someone that something bad happened to :P. As my OB said if you can't breath your baby can't breath. I used albuterol inhale and singular to control my asthma both deemed safe. My daughter has no defects she is perfectly healthy 7.5 month old
