How long after a miscarriage until you can try falling pregnant again

I am going through a miscarriage at the moment. My level's were 62 on thursday than 31 friday and yesterday were 14. I have a few question's to ask about this
1. How long should it take for the miscarriage to complete
2. Is there any pain relief that is worth trying as I was in the hospital and was given morphine but am finding it hard to find anything helping soothe the pain
3. How long after the miscarriage until my period will be due again
4. How long until me and my partner can start trying again
and 5. Is a curette the best or is it better to let it come naturally
I am 21 and started of at 7 week's pregnant but it is hard to be definate with a time as I had the pain's before I knew I was pregnant and my level's were dropping quiet rapidly

I started to bleed 3 days after i found out i was pregnant.  I was referred to the early pregnancy unit. Initialy i was told there was no pregnancy that they could detect on scan however blood results indicated i was pregnant it was a few weeks later they told me they detected a heartbeat and a fetus aprox 5 and a half weeks in size after which the  bleeding and cramping stopped.  However last weekend it started again i should be 8 weeks and this time i was told that the heartbeat had stopped.  They told me the baby had stopped growing and told me to wait for the miscarriage.  I'm due in tommorow for another scan this is purely for my piece of mind as they have stated that the scan is conclusive but as i kept asking if they were sure and could it re-start they would bring me back for another scan.  I cramped for 3 days intensely on and off however i was told me my cervics was still closed after the last period of cramping. The pain has now stopped but I am still bleeding sometimes heavy sometimes light and sometimes not at all for a few hours and then it re-starts.  Is this normal in terms of pattern of bleeding and cramping? Is there any chance they may have got it wrong and tomorrow i will be told my baby is growing?  How long will it all take to complete as i am heartbroken and want it to be over.  How quickly can i safetly try again?  As i'v read you can try as soon as you stop bleeding as you are more fertile and others state wait between 1 to 3 cycles.

I want to clarify my first answer. You may wonder if your miscarriage is almost over, why you'd still bleed for days or weeks. The reason is that the embryo was passed (which gives off the HCG) but your uterine lining still needs to slough off so it can rebuild in your next cycle.

I commented on your other post but will also answer here:

1. It can take varying amount of time to miscarry. Your levels are so low that your miscarriage is probably almost over, if not already over. You may still experience bleeding on and off for a couple of weeks.

2. Tylenol is all you should take.

3. It can take an average of 6 weeks to get a period after a loss. It took me 8 weeks each time I miscarried, to get a period. You cannot count any bleeding as a period. There MUST be 20 consecutive days of NO BLEEDING in order to consider your next bleed a period. This allows the hormones to follow their proper chain.

4. Depends on your doctor. Some say 1-3 cycles. I got pregnant (and am currently pregnant) after both of my miscarriages right away, after the first period.

5. Miscarrying naturally is the best way to miscarry. Your levels are so low that your miscarriage is probably almost over. Women whose levels are in the tens of thousands have a lot longer bleeding period and miscarriage time as compared to someone in the hundreds.

Hi and i'm sorry for what you are going through.
I miscarried back in Oct last year and i was 6 weeks into the pregnancy. I was given just panadol and ibrophen for pain relief but i actually had most of my pain before i knew the baby had died so i was ok just having panadol.
As for the regular period thing everyone is different but my periods went straight back to normal and 4 weeks after my miscarriage i had my period.
My husband and i started trying again straight away, i never went back onto b/c or anything and i got pregnant again straight after my first period. I am now 37 weeks pregnant.
I miscarried naturally also.
Well i hope this all helps and there is a really good miscarriage forum on here that i found very helpful when i went through mine, look it up the ladies are great and so many of the ladies that were going through miscarriages that same time as i was are now also pregnant and some have already had their babies.
Hope you too get pregnant again very soon.

charmaine96,

I am terribly sorry that you are having a confirmed miscarriage.  You are in my thoughts.

1. This varies from women-to-women.  An  HCG level of 5 or less is a non-pregnant level which you need to get to.  Your levels seems to be dropping by 2 every day so you could be <5 as early as today but its impossible to predict exactly.  I would guess your HCG levels will be at non-pregnant levels within the next few days at the most though.  MC effects (Bleeding etc.)  can continue after your levels have dropped though.

2. I dont know the answer to this - hopefully someone else will.  Have you tried Mortrin?  Nothing you can buy OTC is going to compare w/ morphine.

3. It could be a month or it could be several months.  There is no way of knowing.

4. After a MC it is important to have a follow-up with your OBGYN to make sure all tissue has been passed and you dont develop an infection.  A typical recommendation is 3 months but I know of women that have gotten pregnant during the month after a MC.  Check with your doctor on this.

5. My personal preference would be to MC naturally but this is a personal decision.  If you dont pass the tissue on your own you may need medical intervention.

Do you have a follow-up appointment scheduled w/ your OBGYN?  This is important. Your doctor will be able to give you something for pain management, check to make sure the MC is progressing properly, and advice you on when you can start TTC again.

Best of luck to you.
