Hydrocodone and Pregnancy

I had posted about this a while back. I had a very large hole in my molar tooth. I had been perscribed hyrocodone at 9weeks pregnant. I stopped taking them around 18 weeks. I had the tooth pulled out on March 4th. The dentist perscribed me 10-367 hydrocodone for the pain. I did not fill the perscription. I went back again today for a routine check up and he did another x-ray and it turns out i have another hole i did not see on the top molar. He said its up to me if i want to have it pulled or not. I want to but at the same time the pain i was in from not filling the perscription was HORRIBLE! Im worried about taking the pain meds again this far in my pregnancy, Im currently 25 weeks. Will this effect my baby if i do take the meds? any advice (not criticism) will be very helpful.

You should be just fine. this is actually the safest time to have to take pain meds during a pregnancy. I had to take pain meds during both pregnancies and my children are both bright and healthy. Pain meds can be used quite safely during pregnancy if you take them as prescribed and you and your OB are on the same page about it...that's the biggest key. As long as you and your OB keep an open dialogue about your pain and how you're treating it, you should be absolutely fine. A lot of people are under the impression that you can take nothing but tylenol while pregnant and that's, while ideal, an out-dated line of thought. These days Obs know that many things can be taken safely during pregnancy and pain meds actually carry very little risk. There's almost no proof of causing birth defects or developmental abnormalities..the only real risk is that the child will be born addicted and that only happens if you take the meds constantly in high doses right up through delivery; I've actually never met anyone on this site who has had to take pain meds during pregnancy who had a child born addicted (although I've read the odd story here or there).

Anyway my littlest is pitching a fit right now because he's teething so I gotta run but to sum it up - take the pain meds, girl. Pain releases stress hormones that are bad for the baby - worse, in MOST cases, than the small amount of pain medicine that crosses the placental barrier.

I have read alot on the internet about it. And its shown that only 2% of women had a baby born with some form of birth defect, but they could not relate it directly to the meds. I just dont want my baby addicted to them or anything. But isnt it only if you take them close to delivery? ive read this to but i know internet info is very often conflicting. Ive also read that because your in pain your blood pressure can raise which is worse for the baby than the meds are. When my tooth hurt, i mean it hurt so bad i would sit there and cry. I would honestly contemplate pulling the thing out myself lol. (But then i know i could miss some of the roots so i through out the idea) But i just want what any other mother wants..to enjoy my pregnancy pain free even though i know thats not always the case. thank you both very much for the positive support

It's okay to take them. Just take them when you really need them. I had oral surgery in August because my mouth was so irritated and swollen. My right cheek was as big as an orange. Turns out I had an abscess because I had a hole down in my tooth which was noticeable anyway. The abscess got so big if I would have waited another day they told me I would have been dead. I never realized how serious a toothache could be....So I feel your pain on that :(

I've just been prescribed Lortabs for my headaches. Though, I am weird about even taking Tylenol, I know that my doctor is looking out for best interest for me and my baby. If I can't function enough to go about my day, my baby pays for it in the end... My headaches get so bad I don't eat, I don't drink anything, I just stay in bed for hours on end. Taking the Lortabs when I really really need them, has helped me a lot......
