Is this real or false Labor?

Ive been having contractions for the past 6 hours or so. They were between 5 and 8 min apart lasting no longer than a minute last I timed them. I've done the whole drink fluids and walk and everything on the list to see if they are false or real but they haven't stopped nor are they getting any worse. I have also had very soft stool today which my classes said are a sign of oncoming labor and I seem to be losing my mucous plug but there's no bleeding. I know the plug isn't a sign of going into labor but what about the rest of it?
I'm asking cause its a heck of a drive to the hospital and my hubby is at work. I don't want to waste gas and have him miss a day of pay only to find out it's false.
On kind of a different note I was also wondering if a doc checking to see how far you are dilated and all at a check up can put you into labor? My doc checked me yesterday (2 centimeters 50% effaced) it kinda hurt and for the rest of the day I had cramping in my lower stomach. Is that normal?

i'm having the same thing as you.  my contractions have been every 8 minutes for the last 12 hours.  also had loose stools the last 2 days.  however, my contractions, although consistant, aren't getting more painful or closer together.  i wonder if this is the start of a really, really long labor!  i'm glad you asked this question because i am wondering what it means also.  i'm due tomorrow--ugh!!!  i hope it's a sign that she is coming soon!!!!  i have a doctor appt. this afternoon.

have your contractions subsided yet?  i'm thinking mine will...but last night it was so exciting thinking maybe it's finally time!

Yes having your doc check you can casue you to have contractions or start off labor if you are pretty ready to go anyway.  With my first after my doc checked me (he was quite vigorours as i wanted labor to start) i have alot of pain and contractions but they only lasted for a few hours and them subsided.  I would continue to monitor your contractions and see if they get any more painful or closer together - i would also call your hospital and let them know the situation as they would be able tp offer more advice as to whether you should come in or what things to look for.  I would also be good to let them and your husband know just what is happening so they are ready if you need to make a dash.  Good luck
