It's Cindie, Newest Update on Tyler and I!

Hey ladies, Sorry I haven’t been on in a few days. I have big news!!

UPDATE: Tyler James Hamilton was delivered Via Csection on Aug 14, at 4:44pm weighing 5lbs5oz At Loma Linda Hospital. I was 35w5d pregnant.  My doctors decided to deliver him after my normal appointment ultrasound showed Ogliohydramnios or NO or Little Fluid. He was also at that time diagnosed with a rather large VSD or hole in his heard. He also has a tiny ASD which they expect to close soon. The VSD will require surgery at 4-6 months of age as long as he’s strong enough and they’ll watch him closely for heart failure and things like that til then. Funny thing is I did get to experience real contractions. My U/S lasted ½ hr or so, and she pushed REAL hard on my stomach w/the wand.. By the time I was in L&D waiting til my surgery time (set as STAT Csection not really emergency) I begun contracting every 3-4min… boy did they hurt and I was happy to have my Spinal!

Upon delivery, the doctors and nurses had carefully greased up they’re gloves and his bedding in preparation for his fragile skin. He had some tears and rips where the skin had been abraded in utero and thru the birth itself. But most of the tearing came after birth during his first few hrs of life.
He was breathing room air w/the occasional blast of oxygen (still is!). he was also on TPN (IV nutrients) for the first day and night of his life but slowly has been adding breast milk or formula(to supplament the milk til it comes in more) each day starting at 3cc's and moving up to 25cc's every other feeding or so.  Originally they wrapped his wounds with nonstick pads and COBAN or the kind of bandage they use when you give blood.. It comes in pretty colors and sticks to itself. Well we realized it was tearing his skin and I came up w/the idea of using the bandaging they put on burn victims. It looks like netting, with the nonstick pad underneath and  aquafor on his skin.

As of today his skin is healed up and is beginning to peel some. He hasn’t been eating well and has been de stating due to not breathing regularly (he breathes quickly). They said it’s because of his heart and also the fact he’s a preemie. He is ABSOLUTELY Beautiful. He’s got the pretties dark blue eyes and cupid mouth. And he’s got big feet with long toes like his daddy! He is also a very peaceful baby and very quiet. He only cries if A) he’s in pain (that’s been done since his 2nd day when he began healing up well) B) he’s hungry or C) he’s wet or poopy.  Other than that he’s content to sleep. He’s not been eating well due to not having a good suck/swallow reflex. He’ll usually eat anywhere between 2-25cc’s of formula or breast milk. He eats a few one feeding and a bunch the next but they want him eating 30+cc’s at EVERY feeding.  He does have low muscle tone associated w/Down sydrome but you wouldn't believe it if you saw him when he gets mad! he's a strong little Booger!

They’ve got him on antibiotics IV for 7 days and have an umbilical catheter in so they can give him things like his IV nutrition and any meds. He will be in the hospital at least til Friday and will only come home if he has, NO infection. Can eat well, gains weight and has NO de stats.

As for me I’m doing rather well, they’ve still got me on pain meds for my incision. They did a GREAT job on it, double layer stitching as well as stitches below the skin so no staples or outside stitching. (I think they applied a little glue too) I have been up walking around since 9am the day after my surgery, to the point the nurses made me lay down for a while cause I was up and about too much. I had been visiting the NICU between 4-6X a day for about 1-3hrs at a time.

I’ve been pumping since day 1. The hospital provided a Madela breast pump the good kind (yellow one not blue) and I used it while admitted. Tomorrow I go by WIC to pick up a WIC pump (as good as madela) My milk has just begun to come in today and I’m SORE. I had to begin massaging my breasts and applying heat packs before pumping and ice afterwards, but I’m now finally getting about 5cc’s from each breast at a time and it’s slowly increasing. My nipples wound up all torn up at first but have healed mostly.

The nurses and doctors  have all been wonderful to us so the other day I had DH (hubby) go buy a thing of homemade style cookies for both the NICU staff and Maternity staff. They really liked them.  Daddy is EXTREMELY happy to have his little boy here and both grandma’s are proud. Even tho dh’s mom wasn’t happy w/the pregnancy and whole thing at first (she never really liked me) as soon as she saw TJ and I offered to let her hold him she teared up (tho she claimed she wasn’t!)

Well, that’s about it. Tomorrow we’ll be staying at the Ronald McDonald house probably for the remainder of the week and maybe longer. If they have internet there I’ll be on updating everyone on his status!

cindie im glad you and your lil man are doing well. i hope  everything goes good with your c-section and you get no infections.....you know you have a really big heart, and have gone through so much i dont know how you did it, without crying all the time and being so stressed out, or maybe you were but still you are seriously one tough momma sometimes i just dont know how you did it. You truly inspired me and i think you for that...my baby is almost due and im so darn emotional i dont know what to do. sometimes as im driving thinking about my baby or even feel my baby move i get teared up...;( i guess maybe its just normal i dont know.

It really made me mad when you said that nurse was or looked digusted about you b*feeding. honestly i think i can say this, because i actully know you, know what you look like and know exactly what your skin looks like and its not even bad.....and its your baby and your body and that nurse has absoultley nothing to say about you feeding your baby well isnt that what your saposto do feed your baby...????its none of her buisness and that is just completly rude...i think i would have cried, if she said that to me.. and yes you should deff report her, its what she deserves for thinking she could just tell people what to do and rude coments.

cant wait to see pic of you and your lil one....maybe when your settled and recoverd and doing better i can go visit you.

Ladies: Thanks so much for your comments, and congrats! I really appreciate it.

Krissyy~ Well, it was nice of her. I called her and asked her to post the update cause I knew ppl may begin asking where I was! Lol

Hana~ I know about the csection definitely. I’ve got to request antibiotics today because  as of this morning I’m seeing tiny signs of infection. My OB wouldn’t give me antibiotics to take home yesterday because she wanted me to go see the Derm. First, however, today I’ve got a tiny bit of pus and more pain which is telling me to get antibiotics ASAP. I may ask for another shot of them too.

Some info I didn’t post last night:  Everyone there has been great however I had 2 bad encounters, one with a receptionist/nurse at the front desk of the NICU. They were getting a new admit and I’d been warned that I may not be allowed in. I called 1 hr before showing up and they said it would be fine but to ask again at the front desk.
So I go up there on time and as I ask them to call room 7 to see if I can go in, this nurse who’s stuffing her face and obviously not on duty says “You probably won’t be allowed back there because of the new admit” I replied that I’d called 1 hr before and got the ok. She said “well I was just back there and they’ll probably say no.”
That’s when I said, “That’s why ppl check in here first right? So you can call back.” She gave me a smug look and then the other nurse said “ Go ahead, they said it’s alright.” the mean nurse got a surprised look on her face and I just smiled and left. Unfortunately DH was mad and as we walked to the scrub room (within earshot) said, “she should just stop stuffing her face and pay attention!!!”, OMG I just about died!

And another bad experience I didn’t write about last night (I wrote a long enough post)
Also his nurse yesterday seemed grossed out by me Bfing or trying to or something. My LC gave me a nipple shield to try to get him to latch. He couldn’t at the time cause my nips were too flat. and I think so sensitive from the pumping they wouldn’t perk up enough for me to pop one in his mouth, even w/cold water… (I later figured out if I use a hand pump for about 10 seconds to “form” the nipple right it’ll work)
I decided to remove the shield and just try him skin to skin. And his nurse opens her mouth and says, “are you sure that’s ok? He’s going to be swallowing skin along w/the milk”
I looked at her like she was nuts and said, “actually the skin on my nips is very thin due to pumping and I’m not peeling at all. Plus, ppl shed skin cells ALL THE TIME and w/me it’s just visible. It isn’t going to bother or hurt him at all”

She just said, “well, if you think it’s right” kind of sarcastically.
She really embarrassed me, I almost started crying or screaming at her and when I told my mom she got really mad. DH wasn’t happy about it either (he was there) but he knew better than to say anything and let me handle it. All the doctors and nurses there know about my skin problem and how it works and NONE of them have ever said anything like that. I still might report her about it… this chick has the same disposition as my MIL… basically seems to be kind of bitter…..

Agreed cant wait to see picks! Thats great that you can hold him and everything. He sounds like he's a little trouper just like his mummy and will be out of there in no time (although im sure it will feel like ages for you).
Make sure you do get some rest though! Remember that a caesarean is a real surgery and you will need time to recover.
Cant wait to hear from you and little tj again with even better news!

Cindie, great update! I'm so glad TJ seems to be doing better than expected. RMH does have Internet access!!! I knew a little girl who had to stay there for chemo and a bone marrow transplant (her grandparents go to our church) and she just got to go home last week!

Anyway, they're awesome there and I can't wait to see pictures!
