Julian wont eat anything!!! UGHHHHH

This is probably a stupid question but Julian won't eat and has not eaten for a while! He did not take a bottle well at all last night and only about 2 oz of pedialite at about 11pm. He has not eaten anything since! What should I do? I think I need to call the exchange and take him to the hospital but my Mom seems to knwo best and think he dosnt need to go but to wait it out! He has bad reflux and when I give him his meds he does not seem to take them very well! Any suggestions???? BTW he has had a cold the last few days if you think that has something to do with it!

Oh I just read about his ear infections! I had them when I was small and had to get tubes in my ears, twice. I was very sick when I was a baby (got salmonella poisoning through my mom's breastmilk because the regular milk she drank was contaminated).

When babies have ear infections the pain is so intense that eating/drinking can aggrivate it. That, coupled with his cold and reflux, makes for a hard time eating!

Oh poor thing! Colds definitely make children less hungry and get less sleep, too. Definitely make sure he gets fluids, though, and so long as he's having a few wet diapers a day he should be fine.

Isn't it amazing all the different information you can hear about reflux?  If I would have listened to Sarah's first ped...there's no telling where we'd be right now!  I'm sure you get tired of hearing me on my "reflux soap box" but it's only because I was down the WRONG road for toooooooooooo long with my daughter and suffered with a miserable baby (and mommy!) until I was finally willing to read, learn, fight, and try every possible solution.  :)

Yes, it is VERY true that prevacid should NOT be given with large amounts of formula/food because it defeats the purpose of the meds!  My doctor didn't know that either.  www . marcikids . org (or maybe it's .com...can't remember) has a LOT of information about why it has to be given on an empty stomach and why the compounded (liquid) forms of the medicine don't work.  I printed off every page of information from that website and faxed it to my doctor!!  It worked, we switched to zegerid at a higher dose and I finally had the happy baby as a result.  ;)

I am so sorry that he has a double ear infection.  Unfortunately reflux and ear infections can go hand in hand...I hope ear infections aren't something you'll be battling with for a long time.  Sarah finally had to have tubes at 13 months old.  It was amazing how quickly it made a difference for her.  She had had 8 ear infections by the time she was one year old!!

OK, I'm rambling now...I just want to reiterate that I am NOT a doctor...only a very experienced mom.  I had full trust in my doctor so I understand how people want to believe everything their doctors have to say...Just take the time to do a little research of your own.  Julian deserves to be happy...and so does mommy!  :)

BTS:Julian has had a double ear infection and although it has gotten better it is still there and he has now finished 2 rounds of antibiotics! Augmenten and Amox. He goes back to the doctor agian tomorrow so hopefully she says it is gone!

amy0013: My doctor said I could mix it aswell but he has to take the whole bottle to make sure he gets all the meds! That is the problem! Hmmmm now I am confused!

Kirby - what form of meds is your son on?  Most of them have to be given on an empty stomach followed by a meal 30-60 minutes later (prevacid does).  Be careful that the formula isn't degrading the formula before it has a chance to work.  :)

my son has really bad reflux and refused to take his meds.. but i ened up finding a really good trick.. unscrew the top of the bottle and poor a little bit of his formula and then put the meds in.. it works really well!

I'm sure his cold has a lot to do with it.

Did you ever look into getting his reflux meds changed, or made properly, or increased his dosage?  If you say he's not taking them well...then he's probably not getting any relief.  Worst case scenario is that his reflux has caused a feeding aversion.  That is very common if reflux isn't treated properly.  :(  Hopefully it's just the cold!!

I think the cold is a major factor. Conner is just getting over his and during the worse parts he wouldn't eat either. I started giving him 2-4 ounces of pedialyte which kept him hydrated. You should get Julian checked for an ear infection, especially with having a cold. Most babies will not suck well or at all if their ear is hurting, as the sucking causes more pressure and more pain.

How long has it been since Julian had formula? Id say if it has been 24/48 hours I would go to the ER or hospital. Conner didn't eat for 24 hrs and when he did he puked it all out or had really bad diarreah due to the 24 hr flu.

How is is urine output??  As long as he is peeing at least once or twice a day I wouldnt worry about dehydration.  It more than likely just the cold.  Keep an eye on him and make sure he's not running a fever.  But he should be fine

Aspen had a cold this past week and wouldn't eat or sleep. Her nose was all runny so she couldn't breath when she ate and no amount of suctioning would help it. I took her into the doctor and he recommended I give her baby ibuprofen for the swelling in her throat and benadryl for the running nose to dry it up so that she could eat. It helped her right away. I wouldn't recommend giving her any of those things unless a doctor tells you to but I would definitely have him see his doctor tomorrow.

the cold likely has something to do with it.  My kids had a cold a few weeks ago and they barely ate or drank anything.  Just keep offering him pedialite and bottles and he will get back to normal in a few days!
