Lots of bleeding suddenly

Hi everyone.
I am quite worried about my wife, who has had alot of bleeding today. She is 5 weeks pregnant. It started yesterday, or possibly even the night before, and got progressively worse. At first we thought it was just spotting.  She had blood tests yesterday, but this bleeding worries us. It is more red, not brown, and not like the implantation bleeding at all. How does one know if this is normal? Or isn't it? It seems to have got heavier. We should hear the results of the blood test later today or tomorrow, but even so, I would like to put her mind at ease a bit, especially if other people have been through this and it has been ok.
I'll let you know what happens with the blood test.
Thanks

Thanks, it really is not something I would wish on anyone. From such a high to this, but the astonishing part is finding out how many people have been through the same thing. Its frightening. You never really think about it until it happens to you.  It really tears at your emotions like nothing else, for both of us, but obviously she has to deal with the physical side of it it too.  Anyway, we will try again soon, the dr. said we could start straight away, but we will probably wait a bit. Good luck to you too, I hope you also have a beautiful child in the future

Hi there, I had alot of bleeding at 11 weeks and got taken into hospital, I sat there all night bleeding heavy and the doctors thought I was having a miscarriage!  I got scanned a day later to find I was still pregnant, a healthy heartbeat, the doctors gave me an inconclusive result on the bleed as when they done the scan there was no evidence of any bleed. My daughter was born 22nd may 2007 and weighted a  good 7lb 7oz and was healthy as ever!  I am currently 7 weeks pregnant but do feal a bit nervous!  I do wish you all the best of luck and lots of baby dust to you all!!!!!

Hi Layla
The first thing you need to do is have a pregnancy test, if it is positive go in immediately for a blood test.  Once you are armed with this, go and see your dr.  If it is early it could be implantation bleeding. To be honest, I am not sure if brown is bad or not. Maybe someone else can help you with that.
We found out yesterday that my wife had a misscarriage. There is nothing that you can really do about it, it is just one of those things. Having said that, we know of people who have had quite bad bleeding or spotting, and have gone on to have had healthy children.
But get yourself tested asap and take the steps from there.
Good luck

Thanks for your advice everyone. The bleeding is now dark brown again, or it was yesterday. The blood test says that she is still very early into her pregnancy.   I guess, the most anxious part is waiting. At the end of the day, we all want to be told everything will be ok, there is no real answer apart from going to see the Doctor.
In this day and age, we just grow up expecting it to be relatively fuss free and safe, but the reality is to be able to conceive and then have a healthy child is still a small miracle.
I'll keep you posted on what has happened as we find out. We appreciate being able to chat to people (you guys) who have been through this.
Thanks again.

I agree with the last answer.....anytime you bleed in excess outside of your monthly cycle and especially when you are or suspect you are pregnant you should probably go to the ER.....I dont want to scare you........she could be fine but if a child is something that you and your wife have been waiting for and Iam sure you are anxious to find out what is wrong I would go to the hospital......

You need to take your wife in to the ER if you can't get into the Dr.! This does not sound like something you want to mess with. Is she cramping at all?

i agree! I had the same thing happen to me back in jan. and i ended up having a miscarriage..or i think i did, cause they did do a blood test and i had zero HCG in my system.  But in April i found out that i was about 12 weeks pregnant!! so i actually was pregnant back in Jan. So either way, you need to see a doctor ASAP!

Bleeding in early pregnancy can be due to many reasons.  In any case heavy or bright red bleeding is not normal, and she should be seen by a doctor right away.  It could be nothing to worry about, but it's best for her to be checked by her doctor so that he can determine the cause of the bleeding.  Sorry that I can't ease your mind a bit, but the only advice I have is to get her to the doctor / ER.
