MMR shot/autism study...anyone else read it?

http://news.         yahoo.         com/s/ap/20110106/ap_on_he_me/eu_med_autism_fraud

So I don't normally watch tv and get most of my "news" from the internet. I was checking my e-mail and came across this article today. Just wondering if anyone else saw it.

My personal opinion is that people predisposed to autism may have a vaccine trigger it but that doesn't mean the vaccine causes it. Or that people are trying to find blame. Mostly I think autism may be a genetic issue, not a chemical issue.

We are doing a delayed vaccine schedule with our youngest daughter. We believe vaccines are valuable but in slower, smaller doses.

I think the underlying problem in this controversy is that we are unable to trust the companies that produce vaccines or the government agencies that are meant to verify them as safe because there is so much profit to be made off something to be administered to every child born and so much cooperation between the profiteers and those we have trusted to protect the safety of our children and their health. It is just not a good feeling, and the paranoia may be more affected by this basic lack of trust than just a single study. (I too am not saying anything pro or con vaccination).

they say that it is the thermisol or whatever in the vaccinations that cause the autism, but it also says that in Canada, all vaccines that contain it have been banned, so they are now thermisol free...and there are just as many autism cases as in the U.S.

and really think about it, they say that the vaccines cause autism, right? well, isnt there children who have autism, that are just brilliant? so, to me, if it is the toxin that is supposidly causing it, then wouldnt the children exhibit totally different symptoms, more of slower processing? I am not sure, just thinking thats what it would show...

Plus, I have read that most of the children who are diagnosed with autism after immunizations, dont have autism at all...Rather they had fever, which led to either seizures or brain swelling...and that was where their complications arose!!!

I am not trying to say whether I am for or against vaccinations, just trying to point a few things out...

but, it is funny, when I saw this, it really made me think hmmmm

I work in a dialysis clinic and we administer pneumonia shots and we have had several patients to be diagnosed with pneumonia within a week or two after receiving the vaccine...so it is very possible to get the disease/illness even after being vaccinated, but it is really rare in healthy individuals...Everyone is different and have different genes...your genes can actually reactivate the inactive genes in "dead viruses" also you run the risk of vaccines/administered drugs being contaminated and most times you will never know...recently there was a recall on EPO and many of our patients didn't even know and didn't find out until after it became a semi-world wide issue...

i think its just being diagnosed more.... back in the day the less severe cases wernt diagnosed and now they are.... but I also think that there has been a rise in it also.... I think it could have a lot to do with what we eat everything has something in it hormones in all the meat.... the air is more polluted.... also the stuff I read about the cord clamping made a lot of sense also.... so i def think its a bit of both

Has anyone read anything they believe might explain the exponential rise in autism rates, or do you believe it is only that it is being diagnosed more? I do know that there are higher concentrations in areas that have high levels of environmental toxins, such as surrounding outdated coal refineries that "borrow" on their emissions standards.

I just came across this post and wanted to add a quick note.  The Dr. that put together that report on childhood vaccines and autism has now been charged.  Not only was his research been debunked, but their is much credible evidence that he falsified the whole thing.  I am not writing this to encourage or discourage you to vaccinate, but thought it important info to mention on a thread like this.

I never believed that this was a cause to autism either and I have an autistic son.... when getting vaccinated you need to determine weather the benifits out weigh the risks....

Yes, I have heard this.  But I too believe that the benefits outweigh the risks of not getting children vaccinated.  The things kids are vaccinated for, are primarily diseases that once killed people by the thousands.  The reason no one ever hears about Polio cases anymore, etc. is because of vaccines.

FYI- flu shots are available without thimerisol. Even our local pharmacy carries it now. Just ask before getting your shot. Most shots offered to kids these days are thimerisol-free.
The thimerisol-free vaccines are the single-dose vaccines (1 shot from each vial, as opposed to several doses, each with a new needle, from the same vial. Single dose does not need the preservative thimerisol).
I am cautious with what I put into my body because I have risk factors for autoimmune problems. So I get the flu shot, but without thimerisol. Same with all of the vaccines my kids get.

I've never believed the link between autism and vaccines.  I have had all of my kids vaccinated with the required shots.  I also get them the flu SHOT.  There is no history of adverse reactions to vaccines anywhere in my family.  Matter of fact this year the doc said he had seen numerous cases of the flu but what my kids had a few weeks ago was a very very mild case and he attributed it being mild to them having been vaccinated.

Bluegenie: Yeah I knew that only the mist had the live virus, but they all have significantly higher levels of thermisol than regular childhood vaccines, which is why there are significantly more reactions to flu vaccines than childhood vaccines.

I don't worry about getting the flu from the vaccine :-). I have other risk factors for reactions, and so do my kids. That's why we didn't do it.

I just want to add.....

It's a personal decision on whether or not to vaccinate your children.....but I don't believe that the decision to not do so should be based on the research of this doctor.  We have friends whose son (our godson) is autistic and they have blamed it on the MMR vaccine, citing this doctor's "findings" as proof (but, at the same time, they've told us that they noticed he was "different" well before he got the vaccine).  They haven't pursued any additional vaccines for either of their kids as a result.

This is old news......great to be aware of, but he was discredited a long time ago.  Unfortunately, many people still buy into his "discoveries" and do not vaccinate their children based solely on his study.

Spiket- No offense taken!

Ashelen-  Only the flu mist has a live (weakened virus).  The shot has a dead virus, just like any other vaccine. That's why I have to get the shot, and not the mist (I have a heart condition).  Its absolutely not possible to get the flu from the shot. There is a small chance of getting it from the mist though.

I understand where you're coming from Spiket. I refuse to get the flu shot because of a high probability for a bad reaction due to genetics....HOWEVER, vaccines are different. They don't include live viruses, so they don't have the high levels of thermisol that the flu vaccines do. Also, they have been tested for many more years than the flu vaccines, which are - by necessity - made, packaged, and delivered in a very short amount of time :-). My kids are/will be vaccinated; none of us got the flu shot.

Yeah, I used to feel that way till my husband was hospitalized after a simple flu vaccine. I think it's just good to know what the POSSIBLE side effects are so you can at least watch for them. Just trying to share a resource... no offense intended.

There are possible side effects with ANY medication you take, including things like tylenol or advil.  For me and my family, the very small risk of a side effect from a vaccine is much better than the much larger risk of long term effects (including death) of most of the diseases the vaccines protect us from.

You can look up the possible side effects of all vaccines on this web page http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/side-effects.htm

They don't mention autism for the MMR but it can cause side effects ranging from a fever to brain damage.

I hadn't read this one, but I read a book called Eat, Sleep, PoopL: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby's First Year by Scott Cohen (a pediatrician and dad) and it also talked about how the link was bogus.  I highly recommend the book too!

Isn't it amazing how beliefs can be set so strongly by something as small as ONE study?

There was a study that came out before this one that showed how the vaccine autism link was total bogus. There is no link between the two. I remember talking about it in class last semester and a mom in that class still thinks her son got it because of the vaccine. ugh.

I've heard of it, but never fully read it. Hopefully this helps more parents understand the true facts about vaccines and will be able to make better choices. This claim caused so many problems to come back that should never have happened.
