Moms to be on suboxone or subutex?

I'm 24 years old and 6 weeks pregnant with my second child. I've been on suboxone for about 8 months and am curious if any other expectant mothers are too? I'm not looking for judgemental comments, and doubt anyone is on suboxone...just curious!

You say its not harmful but then say quitting could cause misscarriage? Sounds a little contradictive to me.

I know it's a whole different type of drug... I said I thought it was worse. I didn't say that it is for everyone. If your going to ask questions don't be rude when people respond. Thanks.

And thanks tee. I appreciate your posts :) its a tough decision...sub is not an answer or a cure, but if you are familiar with addiction, you know its certainly better than the alternative.

Yes they do put you on subutex if you are pregnant...my addiction specialist said I'm so early and suboxone will not harm the baby for a month or two. Yes I have came off suboxone involuntarily and it was in no way comparable to heroin or opiate withdrawal. Its a whole other type of drug aluc...and thanks for the support kelseymichell

Have you ever had to detox off sub's? If so.. Imagine a tiny baby going through withdrawl. I was on heroin for 5 years and took sub's for the first two weeks of detox and i thinj the suboxone withdrawl is worse. By the grace of god I got clean before I ever got pregnant so I don't fully understand what your going through. I hope the best for you and your little one!  Im not saying this to be judgmental.. I'm the last person to judge but it is best that you get weaned off and are off completly.

My cousin was on saboxone and quit recently, she is around four months pregnant. I am not close with her so I don't know exactly whats going on, but I heard besides being cranky she's doing well and the baby is fine. She has an addiction to pills as well but our family is really supportive of her and I think that has made a big contribution to her doing so well! As long as the doctors say you are fine then I assume you are, and I would follow your doctors advice on how when and if you will be stopping the saboxone. Good luck, it is a hard road to recovery from addiction but it can be done!

What does your doc what you do to?

No
It is considered a harm-reduction treatment. It is a closely monitered prescription drug that blocks any opiates you take, and keep you from experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Its also supposed to help with cravings. It is not a pain medication, though it has history of being used "off the label" for chronic pain

Thanks Geek...suboxone is a medication used with opiate addicts...I'm just a patient, not a doctor , but it binds to your opiate receptors in the brain. Basically, I'm addicted to pain pills, and suboxone helps me with cravings and helps me live a normal life and take care of my family without being consumed by my addiction. My doctor and OB do know I'm on sub, I have a presctiption, and of course I'm wracked with guilt...but quitting subuxone can cause miscarriage. I will be gradually tapering down.

I have worked with mothers and infants exposed to subutex during pregnancy. Heidi is correct, newborns tend to experience withdrawal symptoms, sometimes very severe, within the first few days after both and will be under close supervision from the nurses on the unit. It is a hard process for everyone involved, as those symptoms generally include jittery movements and a lot of crying, which can be very scary and taxing for baby's parents and other caregivers.
If your dosage can be weaned down, that's a great start. If you can get off it completely, thats obviously even better. Anything you can do to make that happen or head in the right direction will make a big difference for you and your baby. I wish you good luck and hope you have a strong support system and a good relationship with your doctors to work on this together.

Yeah... see... I was wondering if any women had firsthand experience, not ignorant assumptions. :)

I heard that theres a good chance the baby will be born addicted to the suboxone and have severe withdrawls from it. I would expect a very difficult and cranky baby if you continue to take it.
