Most important baby item

Okay, I am compiling a baby "wish list" of items that are must haves and wants. I was wondering what is the one item that you found that your previous children just absolutely had to have other than the basics such as crib, swing, etc.

With my first it was a night light so I could breast feed and change diapres in the middle of the night without blinding either of us.

Any other suggestions?

my son loved his fisher-price soothing motion glider. you can turn it any way you want so it glide all angles. its not too heavy to move from room-to-room which i found very helpful when i was in the living room or nights he didnt want to sleep he came into our room and slept in it!

Great Ideas Ladies! We love about everyone of the products listed. My new fav is something I just bought at the local walmart for my cousin and his wifes baby shower. Its called a Soothie, it holds the formula under the bottle in a little snack cup. That way you don't have to premix the milk before you go out. They were pretty neat. The one thing with both of my kids I wouldn't change give away is my bouncy seat, it helped them so much and of course I didn't have to hold them both all the time.

I also used Mylcon Drops and you can never have enough alcohol pads (for little things), qutips, thermometers, tylenol, & motrin. My advice would be to make a lil baby safety kit and have one at home, one at each grandparents, one in each car, and one in the diaper bag. You can never be to prepared. That way if you were to forget something you needed you would have it!

I didn't even think about a diaper wipes warmer, but someone else I know says it was one of the best things they got at their shower. As for the cuticle clippers. That is a great idea too. It would be alot easier to see what you were doing.

Something else I'd suggest is a pair of cuticle scissors. I found them MUCH easier to clip baby finger nails than those big, bulky nail clippers you get in the kits. Even the "safety" nail clippers for babies didn't work. I could barely get his nails and always worried about getting his finger. With cuticle scissors, you have more control b/c you can actually see how far under the nail you're going, as well as clip it closer (without worrying about nipping finger tips).

Of course, you still have to be extra cautious due to the sharpness of the scissors (definitely not something you'd do while they're squirming!) but if you do it while they're sleeping it really helps.

My son is older, so he doesn't want to sit still like he used to. I have to do it while he's watching TV and not paying any attention.

Anyway, just a suggestion! (I actually have a friend who said she does the same thing, so it must not be too uncommon! :-)

Wow ladies.... good advice, i've got a "bouncer". the kind you lay on the floor and can bounce with your foot. and it vibrates and playes water and jungle noise!

I also bought about 6 pacifiers. Nuks and another type. I forgot which kind. But I know they're 2 different shapes, because there's a good likely hood that with him he'll prefer one type over another.
I also got a clip. Pooh bear, just incase. And socks...
Oh, AND a baby play mat for when he's older... but I think the baby bouncer is what he willl like.

The wipe warmer did nothing for me...the wipe was cold 2 seconds after coming out of it.  What I couldn't live without was the swing and vibrating bouncy seat.  Halo sacks, Dr. Brown bottles, mylicon gas medicine.

ohh yeah!!! the wipes warmer...forgot all about that...I LOVE it.  Imagine having a cold wipe on your little tushy.  Even before wipe warmers were popular I would take the wipes and hold them in my hand for awhile til they warmed up some.  I wouldn't want something that cold stuck on my sensitive parts :)

The backseat mirrors are AWESOME.  I just had a plain jane one with my last two but this time I found the one that is mentioned above...got it at walmart for $20 It looks so neat, I can't wait to try it out.

One thing I love (although some people say it's a waste of money) is my wipe warmer. I don't think it "spoils" a child by having warm wipes (especially in the middle of winter). Yes, the wipes in his diaper bag may be chilly, but he doesn't complain. I like the warm ones because it helps to clean the poop off better (if it was a "dry" poop especially and stuck to his butt).
The one we have is Dex Ultra Wipe Warmer. It got good reviews, and I haven't had any trouble with it at all. Here's a link to show you. It says unavailable, but I've still seen them in stores.

Another thing I love is the mirror that attaches to the back seat so you can see your baby while driving. We got one with a remote control so you can turn on the lights and music for the baby while driving. It goes off automatically after about 10 minutes. He loved it, especially at night when he could see the lights really good!

Yeah it's not a busy forum but you'll get your question answered! It's nice because you can also post pictures and links without getting in trouble. They bent the rules for that forum.

And to answer your question, I LOVE lap pads. Those aren't usually on a list anywhere. You can find them at Walmart or BabiesRUs. You use lap pads when baby is real little (before they roll over). You place them under their bottoms in the crib, changing table, carseat... basically anywhere. It helps protect fabrics/sheets from "leaks". That way you have less laundry and less stains!

There's a new nightlight out there that doesn't use cords and doesn't get hot. It's called a Tykelight. I just ordered a 2-pack for $20 at babycenter so you should check it out because it's a closeout price. They're usually $25 a piece.

And I love boppies! I have two.

If you nurse, a Bobby.
Baby bouncy seat, DS loved it.
Bassinet if he/she stays in the room with you so you don't have to get up for midnight feeding.
Good electric pump if you nurse.

a swing or bouncey seat can be a lifesaver...now which one really depends on the kid

a rocking chair WITH foot stool for nursing or soothing baby

I would go with a small lamp with a 25 watt bulb rather than a nightlight....nightlights don't usually illuminate enough...

pacifier CLIPS if you are using pacifiers...saves you from having them fall on the floor and having to be cleaned all the time
