OMFG HELP

My 16 month old daughter has been experiencing off n on diahrea that lasts uaually for 3-5 days every few weeks. I'm assuming its from teething cuz shes slobbin everywhere all the time.
Usually when these episodes occure her poo seems to burn her skin wherever it touches, and that means I need to up the water summore and down the juice, I know, but shes been more fussy than usual today and I'm thinking it's fart cramps, which is understandable cuz I have IBS and I know alllll about them fart cramps.

So my MIL decides she's gunna go head and give her 1 1/2 mL of kaopectate without even asking me!!

I am HORRIFIED of Reye's Syndrome. I dunno who knows what about RS but it is a usually fatal desease that is linked with Asprin-related drugs.

I'm a suffer-and-bare-it kind of person. I'm suspicious of medication and don't like to use it unless necessary. But I want NOTHING to do with ANY asprin-related drugs. PERIOD.
I'm petrified about my daughter have been given an anti-diahreal; Kaopectate that is for ADULTS.
The pharmasist already told her when she went and bought it last time she was gunna give my daughter some that he doesn't reccomend it. And I told her not to give her any.
But this time she goes ahead and gives it to her without my permission and I am FURIOUS.

This is the first and LAST time she will recieve it, but I am scared what could happen because of she'd been given some.

What do y'all think? Do you think she'll be alright?

I think I'll try the BRAT diet, thank you Sasha.

Cindie - I do give my kids what they need, only if I ask the doc or it persribed first. Unless it's tylonal if I suspect she's in pain. I don't think a little tylonal will hurt her even if my suspicions are wrong. Rare that I give it to her unless shes showing signs of pain distress.

My doc suggested BRAT when you or your children have diarrhea.  I saw it on The Doctors a few weeks ago too. B--bananas R--rice A-applesauce T--toast and water or pedialyte.  Worked with my 3 year old DD a few weeks ago.

Riot~ I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum because if it's a med that's really needed I give it (as long as it isn't asperin). I'd be pissed also by the way!!!!!!!!

They say don't give cold meds to babies but when TJ was sick and congested I gave him a dose based on his weight (had hubby double check my math) because if I hadn't He would've ended up in the hospital for breathing treatments. flame me if you like but I did what I felt was best. However when my mom gave TJ chocolate ice cream at 6w old I flipped out!

UGH.... parents and inlaws. Lovely

I am the same way you are about meds. I dont take or give my kids anything unless it is absolutely ness. Im very big on homepathic stuff! Im glad she doesnt have diahrea, but as faar as gas you can boil those soft restaurant mints in water and give that to her. Believe me it works my first had that problem when she was really lil and thats what my dr told me to do. It really helped her. Good luck and I hope she feels better!!!

Your daughter shouldnt of been given anything that is for adults only due to the strength of it. Keep an eye on her and if she seems to be affected my the medicine then dont delay in taking her to a hospital.
However it sounds like your daughter does need help with her pooing. She could have a milk intolerence. Try her on soya milk for a while and see if it clears up.

Well I didn't get the replies till just now, so I guess it's too late to call poison control.
She's perfectly fine right now. No diahrea so far.
I usually use the equate version of desatin because it's thicker than desatine, but not as thick as beaudeux's butt paste, so it doesn't hurt her when I put it on, but it's thick and stays put for a long time.
I won't give my daughter gatorade or powerade. I was always told Pedialyte and Water. So since I have none, and can't get to the store today, lil miss Ivy will be stuck drinking strickly water until I feel it's okay to have a glass of juice again. But for today, strickly water.

I've noticed dairy products worsen the situation; mainly milk.
I'm worried if she's becoming lactose intolerant? It seems like almost everytime I give her milk, diahrea is soon to follow.

The dosage she gave my daughter is based off of what she used to give HER kids when they were babies.
Back in the day when you could smoke in hospitals and give toddlers chewable asprin!

This is 2010 and so much is known these days. When a doctor says DO NO GIVE A BABY AN ADULT MEDICATION- They mean- DON'T GIVE THE D@MN BABY AN ADULT FRIGGIN MEDICATION!!!!!!

I barely slept last night because I was afraid of the medication.
And it set off my OCD rituals again- something I haven't been fully rid of, but came close enough to a hault, of my "checking" compulsions.
I spent most of the night running back n forth in the hall from my room to her room to check to see if she's breathing over and over and over again and it's almost impossible to stop once it starts.
Thanks to my MIL for starting this issue back up on me.

I gatta go though Ivy's wanting to have me put this stupid baseball cap on her over and over again just so she can take it off and hand it to me to put it back on. lmao.
Thanks alot girls.

If I were you, I'd call the hospital and ask them. I know it wasn't a huge amount she gave her, but like tiredbuthappy said, there's not a does for children under two on the bottle. I've never used it so I don't even know what the adult/children's dose is. Not to scare you at all, I'd be more than furious with this, but just to be safe you should call the hospital or poison control and ask them about it.

BTW PEDIALYTE! Gatorade, powerade, and good ol H2O. DS has diarrhea on and off, and the more juice you give her, the worse it could be. Stay away from the sugar drinks, and have her bananas or other food that will make her poop more firm. Good luck with the diarrhea, and warm baths and desitin help my DS.

Keep us updated on how she's doing!

i would also be absolutely furious! Chances are, she's fine, especially if she isn't sick or hasn't been sick recently. But for someone else to take that risk against your wishes... my blood would be boiling too.

How did she even know what dose to give? Does Kaopectate even have a dose for children under 2 on the bottle? If you suspect she was given an inappropriate dose, you can call poison control or the ped.

You can always try simethicone drops (brand name is mylicon) if you think it's gas cramps. That stuff helps at any age and truly is safe and harmless. It's the gas drops you give infants, and the same stuff they give you in the hospital after having a c-sec (those chalky pills that they made me take everyday). Extra yogurt may help with the acidic stools (or, acidophilus if she's unwilling to eat yogurt). DD would get those terribly acidic poops when she was teething too. If it was really bad, tylenol or motrin would help because it reduced the swelling which reduced the drooling. It is the extra saliva that is causing the diarrea. Teething tabs also seemed to reduce the swelling/discomfort/drooling.
