OT - we just had an earthquake!!!

It was a 5.5 on the Richter scale, apparently, and originated near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  We live 6 hours from there and people could feel it (I didn't because I was out on a walk with the boys on a busy street with lots of cars and trucks rumbling past, not to mention serious construction going on).  DH felt it at work.  My brother works in downtown Toronto and said things were shaking in his office and people were panicking.

I don't expect it would have been serious enough to cause any damage or anything, but it was enough to shake people up - literally!!

Lol. Apparently people in Ohio could feel it as well. My FIL's GF said at her work people could feel it and started to freak out and run outside away from the building.

I live in N.Fl and we've got our aquifer...so I'm fairly certain that if we had any sizeable earthquake (we've had a few small ones in the past few years) we would just have liquefaction and all get sucked into sinkholes, LOL. I can't imagine living where the ground moves, just like some people can't imagine living where there are hurricanes....but I don't imagine you expect this kinda thing in Canada...yikes! hope the ground stays in place!!

What a weird coincidence that you were both watching and reading about earthquakes when it happened!!!!

I have lived in southern California for over 6 years and we have them all the time and actually feel about one a month or so.  A little over a week ago we felt one 3 nights in a row and all were centered about 1 hour from me and above 5.5 and it gives you a shake, but nothing to scare us.  Each time we were sitting on the couch.  With 2 of them the sliding glass doors shook and stuff on the wall moved, but nothing fell.   I guess its become a norm  lol  All the bookshelves and heavy electronics are attached to the wall to help diminish the chances of them fall on someone in the event of a heavy quake (not to mention they should be because of children).

I have lived here all my life and not used to them at all they terrify me.  I remember the 1989 quake very well even though I was only 7... the ground shook so hard we couldn't even stand and sat down on the ground.  EEEEEK!  But, I guess if you live other places you have your hurricanes, tornados, it's always something I suppose.

I live somewhat near Toronto and I felt it! A bunch of people felt it here. But what was super weird was that I was watching the OC episode with the aftermath of the earthquake and reading about the earthquake episode right when I started to feel the shaking hahah. We are most definitely rookies over here! Everyone was so shocked lol.

I never realized you lived in Canada! I live in Missouri on a fault line but it hasn't quaked. I have a feeling when it does (not IF but WHEN) it is going to cause some scary damage.

I can't imagine having them all of the time - I'd be freaking out, I think!  We're definitely earthquake rookies here - it never happens.....or, if it does, it's usually not strong enough for anyone to feel.

Ahhh so scary!  I live in California near San Francisco.  We have them all the time!  Couple of weeks ago one was originated 2 miles from my house.  I think it was about a 3.0, but felt so strong because it was so close.  My poor animals freak out.  I worry about them and having a newborn... I want to move lol.
