OT 8 month old baby hitting his head

Hi Ladies-
Hope everyone is doing well.
My baby boy is 8 months old, and sleeps in his crib for 12 hours strait every night.  Here is the issue... he is mobile now and loves to move around.  He tries to crawl in his crib... when he wakes up in the morning all excited or if I put him in there while I shower really quick (he naps with me during the day so he is only in there to sleep at night and while I shower I figured this is the safest place for him).
Well he has been crawling/rocking back and forth in there and hitting his head.  He has a crib bumper, but since he is on his hands and knees his head goes above the bumper.  Yesterday I noticed a big bump on his head and I don't know when he got it because he didn't cry or anything. It is still there today.  He seems to be acting normal, and it's not bugging him.  I think I may call the doctor anyway just because I am a worry wort.
But, how do I prevent this?  How do I stop him from doing this?   Any input would be much appreciated.

I feel your pain...Kahlan is really really clumsy too, and she has no fear. it's a bad combination.

Thank you all I feel much better now his eyes seem fine and he seems to be behaving normally.  If the bump is still there tomorrow I will call.... it's not black and blue or red just a bump.  He has been a little fussy here and there, but I think it's more his fang tooth that is coming in on the top he keeps touching it with his finger.  This kid is going to give me a heart attack... I cannot even imagine when he really starts pulling up.  He only goes up onto his knees on the floor to get his toy basket.  I'm not looking forward to the standing.

He does self soothe by sucking his thumb... never took to the binky, but ***** the heck out his thumb.  I hope he is not doing this on purpose.  When he sees me in the AM he likes to put his face really close to the rails and play peek a boo gets excited does the rock ... then smack...lol.  I think he is more just excited and clumsy.

I'm laughing at myself now....we always say "Grey wanged his head" or "Kahlan wanged her elbow" but I realize that I used the word "wang" by itself instead of as a past term...and considering what that's slang term for, I"m laughing hysterically at myself...god, I need a vacation. my son does not have a huge penis on his head. he in fact has a huge bump on his head from where he WANGED it. shoot me, now. PLEASE. LOL

LOL also not laughing at you, but at the situation. When my son was around that age I was almost afraid to take him to the dr when he got sick because his head was covered in so many bumps and bruises. He'll figure it out. If he starts acting lethargic or sick then I would call the dr other than that get ready because boys are crazy! The bruises and bumps don't stop my son is just shy of 13 and still gets about 2 mild concussions a year.

Yeah completely normal...Grey has a huge wang on his head from pulling up on the table yesterday...he saw something next to his foot that he wanted so he bent over and BAM right on the shelf below the top. Grey sometimes sleeps with us and we don't have a headboard so every now and then during the night I'll hear "THUMP" and it's him scooting up and bonking his head on the wall...even though I always put his musical seahorse there it only works most of the time lol.

And you've been my friend long enough to know that Kahlan hits her head on a regular basis...it's terrifying but something you have to get used to...do you remember when she almost had to get stitches a few months back? both of my kids are trying to send me to an early grave...they get some HUGE goose-eggs and it always scares me but like sabrina said it's usually REALLY obvious when something's wrong...sometimes the bumps can look just AWFUL (huge, black, sometimes they bleed) and there's still nothing seriously wrong....it's one of the hardest parts of your kids becoming mobile; knowing that they have to fall and hurt themselves a lot in the process. just wait until he's pulling up; crawling head-bumps will become a fond memory! you can try putting the bumper up higher in his bed, but truthfully he'll probably outgrow this soon...some kids will hit their heads in bed as a self-soothing thing so you may want to consider helping him self-soothe in other ways - does he still use a binky? - and you're also going to have to come to terms with many many head bumps over the years. you can always call your doctor if you're worried but chances are he's fine :-)

LOL! I'm not laughing at you, but eventually it will be with you. Elijah used to walk up to my sliding glass door and bang his head off it repeatedly. It's just something they do, almost every baby I've ever seen has done it. I think they start off thinking it's funny, and then when they do it too hard realize it hurts...I wouldn't worry about it, Elijah's had so many bumps and bruises, and he's only 2 1/2. It's gonna happen, kids are clumsy and tougher than you think. If he was acting like he had a concussion, eyes all funny looking, throwing up (not just spit up), passing out, all that...then I'd worry, but chances are he's not gonna get a concussion by crawling around bumping his head.

Eventually he'll learn that hitting his head hurts and will avoid doing so...it's hard to watch your child hurt themselves but that's how any living creature learns is through trial and error.
