OT-Baby illness question

Kylie has her first ever fever, so I have no idea what is too high and such, but at what temperature do babies need to go to the doctor? I have baby Tylenol I have her a little bit ago so it's probably higher than it is showing me. She has an ear infection, got shots today and has a cold as well, so understandably she is cranky and sick. I'm just not sure if/when she should go and I can't go unless it's 100% necessary. (It's a $200 co-pay for ER visits and we don't want to go for nothing)

Ashelen:  I have a sheet I was given by a ped a few years ago that lists motrin doses starting at 6 months.  That's always when they started suggesting the motrin to me. But as we all know every doc is diff :)

Well thankfully she's still playful and such. Like we can get her to laugh and everything. She's more tired than usual but that's expected. I just hate seeing her so miserable and not being able to do much of anything to make it better. My mom said I should get used to it, because it doesn't get any better.

Ugh, I hate it when my kids get sick! Fever is a sign that their body is fighting something (could be from the shots, from the cold, all of the above...). Poor little thing! Just watch her. Most kids do just fine. If she becomes lethargic, begins vomiting without being able to hold anything down, she cannot be easily roused from sleep or has a fever over 102F then I'd take her to the ER.

Hey my seven month old just went through this...They told me it was an upper respiratory illness...we just gave her tylenol and tried to keep her as comfy as can...her fever was going up to 103 and "our" pediatrician didnt seem all that concerned with it that high..but, I do know each child is different and each dr is too...I would just keep her with you , but, if her fever stops responding to meds or it gets higher like the others said, then I would definately take her in... Ear infections+shots+a cold, is never a good combo...so she is probably just miserable, and one and or all 3 could be causing the fever...Good luck

She didn't specify on what kind of cold it was. I've listened to different things and it doesn't sound like croup or anything. (It sounded like a seal to me) If anything it reminds me of whooping cough, but I know that's not it. It's mucosy sounding and deep in her chest. Whenever she breathes it's wheezy sounding and vibrates in her chest. Then she's always got a runny nose and no amount of suction or steam clears it up. She's also freezing in her feet but is burning up everywhere else.

The book that I read from the AAP says in infants if they get a temp of 102 or higher to make an appt with the ped/ER. I would do what the other ladies said and keep an eye out on her temp through the night while giving her the tylenol. If it goes up (which it will since temps always rise at night), then I would make the call on whether to take her or not. But naturally, if she gets to where she can't be soothed or has difficulty breathing it's time to take her. Did they just say that she had a cold or what? Lexi had the croup about two-three weeks ago and she was having that barking cough at night and the sniffles. They gave her a steroid shot and after that she was perfect. I hope Kylie gets to feeling better!

I only take rectal temperatures and right now it's at 101.4-- I agree that I won't have her get shots if she's sick again. She's never had a real reaction to them other than screaming a few hours after it's done and she's beyond miserable right now. I'm giving her amoxicillin and baby tylenol so I'm hoping it helps. They said if it doesn't get better in a week to take her back in. (She's had the cough, wheezing and been congested since last Wednesday) Kylie is 7 months old next week by the way.

Isn't motrin only safe over 8 months? i forgot how old Kylie was so I didn't want to mention it, lol. But for the most part we agreed I just say 103+ is the time to take her in, but anything lower than that watch, wait.

THanks for mentioning the rectal/ear/temporal difference Cass I always forget to ask lol

At this age it's probably ok to keep her home unless it gets over 102.  You can also alternate infants tylenol and infants motrin every 4 hours (ex: 12 give her motrin, 4 give her tylenol 8 give motrin etc) if you think her fever is getting too high.  Sometimes that can help get you through the night until you can get an appt with the doc the next day which is always cheaper than the ER.  Unless she's having difficulty breathing, is screaming uncontrollably and can't be soothed, starts vomiting and/or having severe diarrhea or her temp shoots up over 102 *I* would personally keep her home and just watch her.  But this is just MY opinion and what I go by for my own kids.

How are you taking her temp?  Rectal, temporal or ear?  Remember Rectal is THE most accurate and anything under 100.4 isn't really considered a temperature rectally.  Ear temps can typically run up to a degree or so higher than rectal. I don't know about temporal becuase I've never used that.

Hey girl sorry she's sick..it's always so nerve-wracking. IN the future, don't let them give her her shots if she's sick, even the sniffles...that way if she has a reactionary fever her body will have a better chance of fighting it off (it won't be fighting off the illness too). Some doctors wave it off but after going through infant shots with two babies I've noticed they have a lot less side effects if they're not ill when they get their shots, no matter what the docs say.

Usually what they tell us is that if her fever does not respond to the tylenol she needs to come in. as long as you're giving her the tylenol every 4 hours and it's coming down to 99-101.5 with the tylenol I wouldn't worry. just put her in a onesie and some socks and give her some extra TLC....if her fever stops responding (bear in mind that it will begin to go up again as the tylenol wears off - this is normal) then keep an eye and if it gets above 103-103.3* call her doctor and put a cool, damp cloth on her neck (but not her back - you don't want her chilled) and if it gets any higher than that, take her in immediately.

I hope she feels better soon!
