Oral antibiotics, 12 weeks

I was prescribed ciprofloxacin for a UTI today, and am a little nervous about taking it because it says "It did not cause birth defects but it did appear to increase the risk for miscarriages when given to pregnant rabbits." what?!?! My Ob suggested it, and the pharmacist said it doesn't sound like it will be an issue and if the OB suggested it, then it's probably fine.. Ughh I hate taking medicine. Did anyone else use oral antibiotics during early pregnancy and turn out okay?!

Do you know anyone who has miscarried to had any issues w their baby bc they took cipro during their pregnancy??? You sound like you are very sure of its danger but Ive read other posts where woman took it pregnant and their babies were fine. What makes you sure its so bad? Just for my own knowledge.

I actually was alright with that medicine, I just found out I have another UTI though, and am taking a greenish/blue pill for it, it's class b, so it's considered one of the safest to take during pregnancy. I don't think the concern is so much preterm labor when taking antibiotics, but thank you, I'll be looking out!

My sister took a med for a uti (blue pill) and she got severe cramps & went into early labor at 5 months pregnant & lost her twins. I would use caution.

Thank you for the advice! I'll be eating lotss of yogurt!

hanaa_bee, I was informed by my OB, another doctor, and local pharmacist that it was okay to take, I asked for another alternative and that's what I was given, so! I'm stuck with it.

Just a heads up... You may want to take a probiotic along with the antibiotic. Or...eat lots of yogurt! You are more prone to yeast infections when you are pregnant and antibiotics can mess up your ph balance. A good probiotic can keep you in balance. You can buy them at most drug stores or health food stores. Keep them in your fridge once they are open.

Hi as a pharmacist I would never dispense ciprofloxacin to a pregnant woman as the cautionary advice is to completely avoid it. In fact it should be avoided in all three trimesters unlike some antibiotics which are safe in the second or third trimesters. This has really annoyed me as there are safer alternates available. Eg amoxicillin which is effective against uti causing organisms. Please do not take cipro and request a safer alternative.

Macrobid is an antibiotic specifically used to treat UTIs and is a class b pregnancy medication which means it has not been shown to harm the fetus and is considered safe as long as it is not used after 38 weeks of pregnancy. If you have another uti you might want to ask for that. In any case there are very few classes of antibiotic that aren't safe some just work better on UTIs then others

I have chronic uti's and my ob and urologist have both suggested that I go on a antibiotic therapy meaning they want me to take antibiotics everyday throughout my pregnancy im 16 weeks and I've had 3 uti's since I was about 4 weeks each time I've had to take antibiotics for it I wouldn't worry about it and dont believe everything u read online its all meant to freak ppl out...by the way after so many antibiotics I am having a very healthy pregnancy ur ob wouldn't give u anything that would harm ur baby remember thats their liscence on the line :) good luck

I had a UTI when I was pregnant with my son, and I can't remember how it was treated, I assume it was an antibiotic, I just shouldn't look things up all the time, but yes, I almost went into preterm labor with him from a UTI.. SO glad I caught it!

I was antibiotics for a uti when I found out I was pregnant. Then got changed to another oral antibiotic because the first one didn't get rid of it. My baby was fine. Sometimes the risk of not taking the medicine is worse than possible slim side effects. Uti's can cause serious issues if left untreated during pregnancy including miscarriages. It can get into your kidneys and cause all sorts of issues.

Thank you, that makes me feel much better. I called the ER doctor and told him I read some things online that concerned me and he said no it's fine, he consulted with my OB and they agreed that's what I should take, I have to take it 2x daily so it worries me!

I used antibiotics around 8-9 weeks and read thongs about what was given to me. I freaked but took it anyway and put it in Gods hands. Im now 33w3d along. Your doctor wouldn't give you something to hurt you or the baby.
