Ovulation Quesion

I don't understand something. I have read a lot of posts about ovulation. Posts saying you can't get pregnant unless you are ovulating. Everyone goes by when the date of the last period was ad go 2 weeks from there. My doctor does it that way too but I'm wondering if you can't get pregnant unless ovulating, then does that mean you can ovulate while having a period? I really don't understand about ovulation because I just never pay attention to my cycles. When it comes it comes. I actually got pregnant a week and 2 or 3 days after my period started. About 9 days into my cycle I guess. I know people who have gotten pregnant during their period and people who got pregnant right before or right after. I'm just confused. I actually always thought that it was impossible to get pregnant while on your period because I thought the egg had to get fertilized while in the falopian tube and that when a woman is on her cycle the egg is passing through the uterus and out of the body. I'm so lost with all the talk about ovulation. I just don't really understand any of it. Anyone want to clue me in here?

So even when an egg is released if it's not "mature" you don't ovulate that month? But you still have a period? or will you not have a period? That's strange that You can have one egg pass as another is being released. i suppose it's not impossible though. I have always been told nothing is impossible. I've heard of crazy things happening that no one would believe. I learned about how women get pregnant and all that in school but not so much about "ovulation". I never heard of a lot of the stuff I read in the forum. I never cared much about my periods or anything. Unless I know I haven't had one in a long time. I used to go months without one sometimes. Just the way I was. I never thought anything of it. I feel so stupid. I'm 24 and pregnant with my 3rd baby and know nothing about this stuff. I don't know what TTC means or AF or D&C or any of that.

Actually, you ovulate about 2 weeks BEFORE your next period. And no, you cannot become pregnant if you do not ovulate. Ovulation is the release of a mature egg (aka follicle) from the ovary. If an egg is not released there is nothing for the sperm to fertilize.

As for women who get pregnant during their period- they typically have very, very short cycles. As she menstruates the old egg from her previous cycle, a new egg is released from the ovary. The egg doesn't just skip down to the uterus in a matter of minutes or hours, it can take days. Therefore, some women can become pregnant during their period, or right after it ends, but this is a rare occurrence.
