Parvovirus b19 (Fifth disease) exposure during pregnancy

I am freaking out at the moment as a toddler at my daughters child care has parvovirus b19 (fifth's disease). It's quite contagious and is transmitted via body fluids such as saliva. The child care provider informed me yesterday and I did notice a light rash on my daughters thighs and when bathing her today, I also saw it on her legs. My husband thinks I am overreacting and that perhaps I changed the washing detergent which I didn't, my daughter has sensitive skin and I can't use normal detergent or any softeners.

I got my blood taken today and they will check my antibody levels to see if I am immune or not i.e. if I have antibodies and have either had it before or am currently infected. I was told that if the baby is infected with the virus, at this stage of the pregnancy, the chance of foetal death is around 10-15% or the baby may develop a heart infection, or severe anaemia that he/she may require an intrauterine blood transfusion.

I'm so worried and hoping and praying that I have already had this as a child. My Dr said she had a patient whose baby died at 13 weeks in utero following exposure. I don't know how I am going to get through the weekend until I get the results. I'm just so worried and just can't stop thinking about it but husband this I am paranoid, he was there at the Dr's. I'm just so scared :-(

Has anyone else been exposed to parvovirus b19 or fifth disease during pregnancy? If so, what was the outcome?

Thanks guys! Well I'm just keeping my eye out on my girl, checking if she develops a rash. She had a light rash which I described and it went away, so that wasn't the typical rash. Just have to wait for my antibody titres which I will call in for on Tuesday and hope I am immune and pray my daughter didn't contract it. It's scary but the fact I haven't seen a rash all over her body yet has eased my mind a little. I can't do anything, if I've been exposed then it's too late. Then hoping and praying everything will go smoothly.

mumuvtwogrlz: Our baby didn't co-operate, decided to sleep and hide it's parts. DH thinks it must be a girl lol. Will find out in four more weeks and then I have my 3D ultrasound around 2 weeks after that.

I was exposed by two different children in the same week with my first pregnacy. I had my blood tested. I had plenty of antibodies. I had no problems at all. My son is now 4.

I will pray for good and fast results.

My OB tested me for antibodies as soon as I became pregnant since I work with kids and am exposed to it frequently. I learned I did have it at some point in time, although me and my mom can't recall a time when I had it. It is a very common childhood illness, and most people do get it as young children, so chances are you are OK.

One of the moms in my class got it when she was in the third trimester. I don't recall the specifics, but she did have complications and the baby was delivered early. The baby was OK in the long run, although he had some problems in the beginning.
