Positive ultrasound, negative urine and blood at 8 weeks?

Hi everyone, after days of google searches this forum has been the most helpful with trying to figure out my problem. Here's my issue. After a long history or ovarian cysts, I get ultrasounds ever 3-6 months. On my last ultrasound, they found what appears to be a 7mm gestational sac. At that time I would have just been 6 weeks along. I have never had problems with my period, always every 26 days and last 5-6 days. I never got a normal period in the month of november or december, both resulted in early dark brown spotting that lasted 3 days in november and 2 days in december. VERY unusual for me. After my ultrasound, I received a call from my oncologist asking if I could be pregnant. I didnt think so, so I told the nurse no, until I hung up and crunched the numbers and realized everything made sense. She advised me to take a pregnancy test to be sure, that it didnt appear to be anything else other than a gestational sac based on its shape, sonography and location. I took two home tests at around 7 weeks, both were negative. But it didn't sit right with me so I made an appointment with an OBGYN to be sure. They did a blood test which came back negative as well. I'm currently waiting to get a call back from the doctor to see if he wants to do a repeat ultrasound.

My biggest concern is the periods. Never in my life have I been more than 1 week late and I always always always get horrible cramps. However, october was my last normal period. I didnt get any cramps in nov or dec. with the spotting. My oncologist didnt seem worried about my ovary at all when I mentioned funky periods, claiming spotting was still bleeding so my ovary is still functioning. I have a 5 cm "normal" functional cyst on my ovary (which in the 8 yrs since my diagnosis I have never had a functional cyst last past a period, I normally get teratomas/dermoids). That leads me to believe it could be the corpus luteum cysts that ultrasound can see has filled with blood, which is why it still remains. And neither teratomas nor functional cysts are hormone secreting cysts, so that explanation goes out the window. I was in the ER early november for abdominal pains but they never mentioned a pregnancy then (would have been way too early) and contributed it to the hemorrhaging cyst. I've had pain twice since then.

For the past month or so I have experienced daily nausea, but I contributed it to my acid reflux. My acid reflux has never been worse in my life than it has been the past 2 months, and I didnt realize until now that pregnancy hormones relax the sphincter which would explain tons. My breasts were extremely sore about a week before the ultrasound but have steadily gotten better, now just being sore around the nipples. They have no doubt grown in size, my bra has been tight for weeks. Since this past saturday, my symptoms have gone into overdrive. Headaches daily, extreme nausea up until early afternoon, nearly vomiting daily, as well as sleeping 15 hours a day and still being tired. I've been wary about letting things get to my head, but the symptoms are definitely progressing.

The OBGYN told me one of three things could be happening. 1. I have a normal intrauterine pregnancy, 2. Miscarriage, or 3. one intrauterine pregnancy and one ectopic pregnancy. But now after the blood test is negative I am left wondering what is going on with my body. I still have not gotten my period, I very lightly spotted all weekend so he told me to take it easy and stay in bed, and the spotting stopped completely today. I definitely have not had heavy bleeding/cramps or passed anything that would indicate a miscarriage, so if I had a sac on a scan, its still in there. Plus my symptoms are progressing which is confusing with negative tests, but still reassuring that I havent miscarried.

I'm sorry this is so long, but does ANYONE have any insight on this? I'm going crazy waiting for the doctor to call back and google is giving me nothing. Has anyone had both negative blood and urine at 8 weeks pregnant but was still pregnant?

Hon, a blighted ovum IS a baby. It is a pregnancy that didn't progress past a certain point, and often results in a missed miscarriage. I had a pregnancy diagnosed at 7&1/2 weeks and didn't bleed or lose the pregnancy until 13 weeks gestation. But I continued to have pregnancy symptoms up until the bleeding due to my hormone levels not dropping off. This could be what's happening to you. On the more positive flip side, you may be one of a small percentage of women who's hormone levels are not detectable in their blood or urine for a good portion of pregnancy, and so early test are not reliable. That sort of thing is called a 'cryptic pregnancy' and can be kind of scary, but often results in a healthy baby. Your best bet is an ultrasound, so push your doctor to get one. Good Luck

Just an update. Looks like AF has arrived. Started out with dark brown spotting very lightly like my past two periods, but it progressed to more cramps and having some red and clots mixed in. Still bleeding lightly as of today so it is not looking like a m/c. Still frustrated, however, it would have been nice to know if I am capable of conceiving on my own, since I had finally come to term with probably needing IVF in the future. Looks like I will just have to wait and see what the future holds and if my u/s in march has any answers.

I finally spoke to the doctor. He doesn't think I need a repeat u/s as of yet, it is more likely that I had a blighted ovum/miscarriage due to my hcg levels, or just an endometrial cyst, although he did admit that an endometrial cyst would not effect my periods so he's leaning towards the latter. He said since my period is only like a week and half away (which would most likely coincide with a u/s if I scheduled one now), to wait and see if this period is normal. If I miss it or its only light spotting again to check my levels one more time. So as of now, I am going to stop thinking about this, enjoy my Christmas and live my life until my period arrives on Jan 4 and I will go from there.

Well the OBGYN I went to was a rollercoaster in itself. I brought my ultrasound report with me thinking this was a little outside of my oncologist's practice and I had to explain to him 10 times I was there to confirm the pregnancy as he kept asking why I was there for my cysts when I go to one of the best hospitals in the country. Basically took me in circles, did the blood test then said he'd call with results and take steps from there. They didnt say whether it was qualitative or quantitative when they called, just that it was negative so I asked what the doctors next step was, and the nurse tells me she'll ask him and give me a call back that day or the next. Two days pass and I call to see whats up and they acted confused as to why I was calling. At that point I decided this was not the doctor for me and told them to just send the results to my oncologist and I will take it from there. I got a call today saying the rest of my results were in (all normal and negative for any STDs, etc.) but doc wanted me in for another ultrasound for my cysts on my ovaries but to let me oncologist take care of what they saw in the uterus. Completely backwards and I jsut told her I will take things from here and for the 100th time my oncologist handles my ovaries. Whew, definitely NOT the doctor for me if they cant even listen to what I am saying.

So now I am somewhat patiently waiting for my oncologist to call because I've already spoken to the nurses and I just want the doc to order a repeat ultrasound once and for all. He is in surgery during the week, so I will most likely have to wait until he is in the office on friday. It's been 3 weeks since my ultrasound and I (and the babys father) just want to know what is going on!! At this point it could very well just have been a blighted ovum, or progressed into something and I'm going on 9 weeks without prenatal care if that is the case. I'm just going to call the office tomorrow to confirm he got my message and make sure he is in the office this friday to the christmas weekend. I just want my ultrasound so I can have some peace of mind already.

Anyways, thanks for the replies, it's given me a glimmer of hope and best of luck to you MsKitty. I hope its a happy ending for us all :)

Oh man. What a rollercoaster!
I had an ultrasound yesterday after a series of hpts that went from positive to negative (I had given up testing a month ago).I expected to hear either that I was not pregnant and something else was causing symptoms, or to see a three-month fetus. What we actually saw was indications of a 5-week pregnancy (positive urine, which I also hadn't expected after all that testing trouble at home.) My OB thinks it's a new pregnancy, but now waiting on blood work to see if the baby's growing or not.
Turns out sometimes ultrasounds can really complicate things! Seems ridiculous that nobody's doing a followup scan for you. Maybe get a second opinion? Do you know whether they measured your hormone levels or just did a straight up positive/negative test?

Bumping this up!
Waiting for a call back from my oncologist, but hes in surgery during the week and in the office Fridays, so the wait is killing me. Whenever he does call, I'm requesting a repeat ultrasound now rather than waiting until March. Mostly because I need to get my wisdom teeth removed and I'm not having that done until I get any answers. Took my last test today, 9 weeks exactly and it was negative. I still dont understand how a sac could be visible without a positive test, I guess the ultimate test is the repeat ultrasound.

Update:
I've officially missed my second period, with only minor spotting this month again. OBGYN just referred me back to my oncologist with the negative blood test, and my oncologist said he didnt need to run anymore tests except my repeat scan in 3 months like planned. So now I guess I wait and see if anything goes back to normal next month. I wish I could have at least had a follow up ultrasound, but that didnt happen. I'm waiting for a call back from my doctor to see if I can at least get a ultrasound just incase.

I would love to hear from anyone else who has gone through this, its incredibly frustrating and I would love the insight.

That gives me hope, thank you! And I will definitely keep you updated on this, seems like every time I tried to research forums no one told the outcome, so hopefully this will help someone out in the future :)

I also have had your similar situation but the end result is a pregnancy.... My issues started last Febuary I missed my period(s) for three months taking tons of tests, when it was multiple cysts.... August it started again so I assumed the cysts were back again as I had no posative preg tests..... October I went in for an ultrasound again to confirm the cyst and they found I was 8wks pregnant.... I hope you have the same end results keep me posted I would love to follow the story
