Prenatal Testing

Can doctors correct spina bifida while still in the womb?

This question comes from our recent talk with RE about first trimester testing.  We were tested for every kind of genetic marker with RE and have decided against it.  Plus we've been through so much to get pregnant and to sustain a pregnancy we wouldn't dare think of aborting our baby because of some kind of genetic disorder.  The only thing DH is concerned about getting tested for is spina bifida between 15-20 weeks.  DH is thinking that they can operate and repair this while in the womb and that it's important to get tested for this???  Has he just lost his mind?

I saw a story on tv about a woman pregnant with a baby with SB and they delievered the baby pulled it out then closed up the hole in her bk. Not sure what else has to happen more surgery or what though. I know thats not a good thing to have but this woman was able to keep the baby till full term then had it and they fixed her bk.

It's a good idea!  I got tested for everything with my son, because with my daughter by the time I found out I was pregnant I missed all those opportunities, and this way you really only have to test once, to know if any future kids may have it or be at risk for it.

Well, I read about all of the testing and this is one of the few that they can actually test by blood and there is no risk of a miscarriage or harm to the baby.  So, I thought we'd at least test for it.

Oh and, if you wanted to still get tested for the genetic disorders, and still keep the baby, you can look at is as a way to prepare yourself.  So say it comes up positive for something.  You would have all this time to research it, and while your seeing specialists about it, because you would probably start that while pregnant, you can get to know the doctors and ask all the questions to help you be prepared.  My friend did that with her boy who has autism.  She said she felt more relief knowing about it before he was born so she had time to deal with it emotionally and learn all about it!

They can operate on you while your pregnant.  And then if they do that you will be on bedrest from that point on.  Usually the test will come up negative if no one in either one of your families even has it.  Or a form of it.  But yes, they can operate on you, and open your womb and correct it!
