Prenatal Vitamins??

I'm early in my pregnancy :) 5 1/2 weeks and went to the doctor last week and got a prescription for my prenatal vitamins- The DR prescribed Gesticare DHA- Even with my insuracce the co payment was $50 (for one months supply) I think this is kind of high so I'm wondering what are my other options as far as prenatal vitamins?

Is it okay to take OTC prenatal vitamins? What prenatal vitamins are you taking?

I bought the OTC Materna, just as good as the prescription stuff for a fraction of the price!

I pay $10 a month for mine that are prescription.  The few pharmacists that I've talked to all told me that over the counter dose not have all the same things (amounts) in them as the prescription ones.  I'd suggest asking the Pharmacy if they have a generic of that one you can use, or call your dr and tell them you need a different prescription because you insurance isn't covering enough of it.

I dont take prenatal vitamins cause of a problem I have with pills... But doctor told me to take 2 Flintstones vitamins a day and it would amount to the same as one of those.

Christ!    $50.00 is a bit too much. I pay $10 for mine. Ask your doctor if it'd be ok for you to take Duet DHA instead of Gesticare DHA. Those are the ones I take and they are great. They even have a generic which of course has the excat same thing for only $5.00. It is also prescription. You don't have to pay that much for your vitamins :)

Good Luck!

My doc told me to get OTC Materna. The cost is much lower than what you have payed. You dont wanna drain the bank acct. before baby arrives.

I'm sure OTC are fine, but ask your doctor if you should be taking anything extra on top of the OTC ones, or just go ahead and buy them/write down how much of what the OTC have and take the list or OTC vitamins to your next appointment and ask what else you should be taking with it. If you have a months worth, you should have enough to get to your next appointment.

yes its fine to take otc vitamins..im not sure that there is a big difference in the prescription ones, i think the prescription vitamins might just have a higher amount of stuff in it. i am taking prenexa which is a prescription vitamin but before i got to my ob at 12 weeks i took an otc vitamin that i got from winn dixie. i also purchased extra calcium & folic acid.
