Question about nipples...

Well firstly, my aereola and nipples get really dry on occasion and i see a little skin peeling off, i'm only at 14 weeks now, so is it safe to use lotion on them, as long as i stop long before i begin breastfeeding, or should i just not? I use cocoa butter lotion but i also have lubriderm for dry sensative skin, too. Also, when I get out of the shower, in between the creases of my skin on my nipples is sometimes white, do you know why this is? Should i do a better job of keeping soap or conditioner off of them or is this normal? If i see if i can express milk yet, for the sake of curiosity, nothing yet. so i don't know whats up with this.

Okay thanks, I haven't been washing them with soap, I know better :P just i gues sometimes when i'm rinsing my hair the conditioner might get on them..Anyways, thanks.. i'll check it out. the cocoa butter lotion seemed to have helped already, but i'll remember that when the time gets close.

Lansinoh is amazing.   I tried lotion once or twice and it seemed to make the problem worse.  I would definitley try to find some Lansinoh.  It's lanolin and you can probably find variations of it but that brand is awesome.  As far as the white stuff....I think it's probably from the bumps on your areola (if you have them) they produce stuff that is supposed to keep your nipples supple.  So I wouldn't wash it off wiht soaps like the other girls have said.  Just rinse with water.  Good luck! Happy pregnancy to all and Baby dust for everyone else ! :)

Yeah, don't use soap in the shower. You can use lotion right now if you don't want to use up the pricey Lasinoh (save that for when you're nursing!). I think because it is getting colder, skin gets dryer, especially during pregnancy.

That white stuff is probably dried colostrum (pre-milk). You won't be able to express milk or anything. It probably got there if you or your DH have been messing with your breasts. Also, water has a tendency to relax you and make milk/colostrum flow. Don't worry about it. And don't try to express milk right now. You can hurt yourself if you don't do it correctly and honestly, you're way early in your pregnancy to get anything out.

neasyc is right about that cream.  It's great.  The brand is Lansinoh.  I only know the spelling because I have some of their breast milk storage bags right here with me at work, as I am still nursing (so I looked at the box ha! ha!)  And I would be careful about the shampoo and conditioner and sopa also.  It does help to try your nipples out as well as the rest of your skin; especially this time of year.  If you are planning on nursing, they say the same thing.  Just to use plain water to wash and not use soap on your nipples.
