I have a question about quitting smoking and pregnancy... Please do not judge I feel horrible already. When I was pregnant with Julian my 2 1/2 year old I was able to quit smoking at 6weeks pregnant.. no problems. (his father didnt smoke so it made things a bit easier) Both children were planned..... I am almost 12weeks and am concerned because this babys father smokes and I am having a really hard time quitting. We are getting married on Friday and that is adding to the stress, but that is no excuse. Is there any ladies who smoked this far into pregnancy and were able to quit and if so what did you do to quit.
I don't smoke so I can't help with personal experience and I won't lecture you about the risks. I know my mom did hypnotherapy to quit and it worked the first time. I also had a friend who did the auricular therapy also worked but her husband smoked too so she eventually (about a year later) started again. I see that you live in missouri, I'm a respiratory therapist at a STL hospital we have free programs that we offer to our moms with babies in the NICU, I can get some numbers for you if you want.
I had the same problem you do. With Elijah it was so easy to quit, I weaned myself by two months pregnant, and this time it was a little harder. DH smokes so it wasn't very easy to do in general. What *I* did was smoke my last cigarette of the day got rid of the rest in the pack and just didn't smoke the next day. It was easy for me since I didn't have the ability to go out and get a pack and I wasn't around DH all day since he was at work. When he got home I had already been fighting cravings all day, and just refused to allow myself to have one. It was hard the first few days but it got easier and easier as time went on. The other thing I'd suggest is the times when you make it a habit, like after eating, first thing in the morning, right after sex, with your coffee, right before bed, whenever you ALWAYS have one...cut that one out, even if it's one a day you're cutting off, it's one less you're having a day. Don't stress out too much over it, try your hardest to cut back one at a time if you have to. It's hard but you'll get there!
I know how you feel kinda. In my case I smoked the last few i had when I found out. then i didnt smoke again till about 5 months, when things got really stressful. and DB smokes too so it was very complicated... Dont beat your self up, i had one maybe once a week after 5 months then it slowwly turned into one every few days... take it one day at a time.. and respectfully as your husband to help you out...
My cousin smoked during her pregnancy with her now 2 year old. She tried to quit but she said she was insanely b*tchy because of it... for the time that she did stop smoking, every time she had a craving she'd pop a piece of candy in her mouth. Takes a few times to figure out one to calm the craving I'm sure. She also chewed regular gum. Not any of the stop smoking gum.. Or even would eat popcicles... or a very small piece of chocolate.
Now she's back to smoking like it never happened. I saw a commercial the other day for Smoke Assist or something like that you smoke that looks just like a cigarette but it's nothing more than water vapor.. Crazy the things they come up with.
A great time to try and quit would be right after your wedding. I quit on my honeymoon just because all the wedding stress was over and I figured it wasn't going to get any easier than that. I think the important part is that you do quit before the baby is born.
My sister smoked up until in the end, like sneaking out of the hospital to get one last cig in before her epidural. Anyhow her baby was really skinny. He never did start to gain normal weight until he was almost a year. I read later that smoking while pregnant can cause a low birth weight. He was healthy just skinny.
I think if you can quit while in your second trimester the baby should be fine. Oh for quitting get a big pack of assorted hard candy! It helps.
I forgot to say that she did quit smoking after he was born by using acupuncture. She was able to quit without all the side effects I had. I guess the acupuncture works. Good luck and congrats on the wedding!
hey, I know people who personally smoked their entire pregnancy, and had normal healthy babies...some were even huge..so, I am not going to lecture you or even look down on you..I know it must be hard, especially with the wedding being an added stress...take it one day at a time...anything you associate with smoking try to avoid..keep yourself busy, if you have a craving for one, go clean house or take a shower, heck even eat something..not sure if those work, but hey they are worth a shot lol
Good luck hun, and dont beat yourself up...you are doing just fine...
