Recurrent Miscarriages - When to Try Again????

I have a 3 year old son and I have experienced 2 miscarriages this year. My Dr. said to wait 2 cycles (just like before) and then try again. I have not had any problems getting pregnant. Has anyone else had more than 1 miscarriage - When did you try again - How long did you wait in between? I am so scared of losing another.

Thanks

I also have a 3 y/o...I had one miscarriage prior to his conception and birth in 2004...we started trying for another baby last summer (2006); lost one pregnancy in 1st week of August 06 (at 7 weeks) and then became pregnant again early September 06 but lost that pregnancy mid November 06 (at 10 weeks) so we decided to wait a couple of cycles...then we became pregnant again in early February 2007 and now I'm 36 weeks pregnant and expecting to meet my little one in another few weeks...those first 13 weeks were long and worrisome to say the least...despite all the heartache we  endured during the losses we knew we were meant to have another baby and are being blessed with our 2nd child...just remember that you have a child already so you know you can sustain a pregnancy...best wishes and try to stay hopeful:)

Thank you all for your reply - Both times I have had my progesterone levels checked and actually they were great! They were right where they should be - so.....that is why this is puzzling. It comes back to the waiting thing. Insurance won't cover further tests at this point. I just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your responses. It is really nice to hear others who have been down this road.

Hi and im very sorry what your going through. I know how you feel in july i found out i was pregnant and the same night i miscarried and it killed me i kinda went crazy for about 2 weeks not knowing what happened, then on september 24th i found out we were pregnant agian i was so happy but things went wrong again and they dont know what is going on the numbers are going up and down and im bleeding. but i did get all the tests done to see why this is going on. dont know anything yet. but i can tell you that you can try again as soon as you get a normal period and that the person who said something about the progesterone levels is right i had to have 2 injections of it and i have to be on the suppositories so that really could be your problem so my advise to you is what my dr told me whenever you do try wait for your period to start and count the days until days 13, 14,and 15 and have sex on the 16th day get the injections and then start the suppositories because if you start later on it could be too late then you could misscarry if thats the problem. and i know your pry wondering it doesnt hurt to get the shots if your levels were fine. so i hope i was some help to you. hi, I've had 3 misscarriages, I waited one cycle and fell pregnant straight away, with the help of progesterone supplements, I am now 26 weeks and 5 days pregnant.

I think it depends on a few circumstances before a dr will send you to a specialist. I've heard 3 is the magic number of miscarriages before a dr will make a referral or begin testing for problems.  I had two and flipped out at my dr's office - and I was referred. I was 31 when these happened - maybe my age played into it or the fact that I freaked out - either way - we have been tested and things are coming back fine so far.  Still no answers -but - no problems yet...  My dr told me to 'wait a few good cycles before trying again' and I freaked.  The specialist said to wait 3 cycles before trying again.  I was put on prometrium to see if that would help - afte two cycles with that - nothing.  So now I've been told they want to do a 'follicle study' to make sure I'm ovulating...  Good luck to you.

I was actually asking about your progesterone levels, those would be different than the hcg levels. Progesterone is what actually sustains the pregnancy, and a lot of times levels that are too low are what causes the miscarriages. It is easily fixable with suppositories though, so if you get pregnant again, ask about progesterone levels, it should be taken with the hcg levels anyway, so it shouldn't cost extra to find out about them. If your progesterone levels are under 15, I would ask for the suppositories. They aren't that expensive even if insurance won't cover them. I got 30 of them for about $30.

Insurance companies DO stink, I can't believe they make you have THREE before they will help you. I guess it's the same as making someone wait a whole year of ttc before helping. Good luck!!

Thanks for your reply. Yes - My HGC levels were monitored throughout both pregnancies. There were actually no red flags with that so no definate answer for MC's. Dr. says because I carried my first child without any problems he thinks that there may not be any explanation for them. He and I have discussed testing to determine any problems - My insurance won't pay for any of those tests until I have had 3 MC's. That stinks but I am certainly willing to try once more and leave it in God's hands. It has been 3 months since my last MC and cycles are certainly back to normal. Dr. has given me the green flag to try again. I was just wondering if anyone has been down this road and had any advice. Thanks for reading.

By the way, do they know what is causing the miscarriages? Have you been having your progesterone levels monitored?

I have only had one miscarriage so far (knock on wood). I am 6 wks pregnant now, and if I lose this one...I don't know when I will be emotionally ready to try again. Physically I would listen to your doctor, he wants to be sure your uterus is completely healed so it will be able to sustain a pregnancy again. I know you can have healthy pregnancies before the cycle or two of waiting, but the chances of it sustaining are better when you wait.

I'm so sorry for your losses...try to stay positive even when it doesn't seem possible. I understand not being positive though, as I am unwilling to even admit to people that know I am pregnant that I really am. I try not to think about it. Good luck!!!
