Root canal while pregnant? Joy, lach, everyone.. advice plz.

K, Well I got a cap put on my tooth on thurs... they gave me tylenol 3 for the pain. I felt safe going to the dentist and taking the med as I'm well into my second trimester.

Thing is, he didn't do a root canal because he didn't wanna take more xrays. (it's a tiny little machine, with VERY MINIMAL xrays) They put 2 lead aprons over me too, so.. no worries.

Fast forward to today, well, my mouth is KILLING me, I'm out of tylenol3, the gum area is swollen, and even tho my gums don't hurt anymore, my tooth and jaw kills when I bite down. OUCH. I cant bite down, I can't chew, nothing. it HURTS... Im thinking about going in tomorrow and requesting that he do a root canal and redo the cap. I actually had to get a vicoden type medicine called Darvon from my mom because it's hurting so bad. It just now took effect.

Does anyone agree?

I need to hear some of your experiences with this.
BTW, I'm on Amoxycillin for a sinus infection, been on it since thursday. So I'm pretty sure there's no worries regarding infection from the root canal.

Thank you all, Cindie

thanks for the advice,

Joy~ my ob just perscribed me 1 1/2days of T3 for a migraine. she said it's safe except that I shouldn't be on it for a month or two before giving birth since the baby could come out w/withdrawals.

Swade~ The T3 barely touched the pain. just enough to eat, problem is.. I think a little of the pain I'm havin is nerve pain from the nerve block he did on Thurs. It hurts on top and bottom for some strange reason, and I know I don't have a bad cavity.. the only other thing I can think of is that I'm grinding my teeth at night?

Alaysha~as I said to joy.. my ob said if nothing else works, to take T3 but not for very long. I am 4 months 1 day and CANT wait with this pain.  put it this way... I will end up losing weight during this pregnancy due to not being able to eat if he doesn't do anything.

AFM~ the xrays, I'm not worried about simply because I see it this way.. What about the full body part xrays they do on women who are in car accidents, or broken bones? Compared to that, the little xray they use on my teeth is nothing. They even said its VERY low.  And I know he's(dentist) worried about infection, but if that's whats in my tooth from the drilling and NOT doing a root canal... then we gotta do something anywayse.
Still.. I am worried about what the pain med. could do to the baby, but I feel relatively safe since I'm into my second trimester. I'm glad there are others of you who've gone thru it.

I know that during my pregnancy I had a tooth that was KILLING me. I went in to get x-rays and they told me that I had a bad cavity and that I would probably need a root canal. The problem was that because I was so far along (32 weeks) they couldn't give me medicine to numb me for as long as they would need too and they try to take the minimum number of x-rays that they can. I ended up having to wait until after I gave birth to get it fixed. It sucked and I was in a lot of pain but if your doctor wants you to wait then the best thing to do is wait since they are concerned that it could harm the baby.

Also like Joy said you may want to contact the doctors office and make sure that medicine is okay for you to take. Until then I would stick to tylenol.

I had to have my tooth pulled a few weeks ago, but I was 27-28 weeks at the time, I was given percocet for the pain.  They will do what you need them to do, as long as you are far enough along, at least your second trimester.. I had two x-rays, and they injected me with novacaine, and gave me the amoxcillian.. So like I said you should be fine, but I did call my doctors and checked with them, and my dentist called the office to make sure that he could go ahead with the procedure and what to give me.. I had a huge infectino in my gum, so I was about septic, so it had to be done, but all is fine now and in my 32 week..

I don't have any experiences with this. The best thing you could do is call your doctor's office FIRST and ask them what pain meds are safe. Then ask them if a root canal would be okay during pregnancy (it most likely is). From there you can decide whether or not you should call and schedule an appointment with the dentist.
