Sushi & pregnancy

Hey all..

Ok Im dying for some sushi... I don't eat it that often... maybe once a month? It's too expensive... I hear that i should avoid sushi for mercury poisoning... But I mostly eat tempura rolls, so the fish gets mostly cooked. I do eat some raw fish (shrimp rolls). I have never gotten sick eating sushi before.

Anyone?

If you can find them you can substitute cucumber rolls instead of raw fish. i am so dieing for sushi too. but i moved to a place that really doesn't have sushi so at least i am not tempted by the all you can eat sushi buffets in nevada! haha

I have eaten sushi in both of my pregnancies. As long as done in moderation my doctor gave me the go ahead.

Thanks all for your posts...

I've been doing a lot of readin about this.. It seems that the fish that contains the most poisons & parasites are fish we normally don't eat... well I don't anyways. Fish such as mackerel, shark, plate fish, etc. They say you're more likely to get sick from chicken than fish.

it seems that the sushi we eat is flash frozen to kill off the parasites.

Here's an interesting article I foundon this subject:

I still ate sushi once a month while pregnant, but only cooked fish nothing raw and no tuna  or salmon (high mercury fish) at all.

It is not just the raw part but fish in general. Most of our fush comes from farms and they not only have high levels of mercury but other things as well. When I was preagnant with my other kids tuna and salmon was ok but it is not anymore:) I know sad but I would rather be safe then sorry! The FDA says that even if you cook it the mercury will not goaway or the other things you should not eat right now. THey also say that no child till age 3 should have any fish as their brain is developing still.

My OB advised me "No raw fish or meat". Just to be on the safe side I would just stick to vegetarian calif rolls if you really crave sushi.

It's recommended to stay away from it. Not just for the Mercury but there are other foodborne illnesses that you can get from raw fish. Listeria is one it gets in your blood system and crosses the placenta and will cause a miscarriage. Thats why soft cheeses and lunch meat is off limits unless it's heated to at least 360 degrees before eating.

My boyfriend is Vietnamese, His family eats a lot of fish and look at that culture in general all the Asian cultures eat Sushi a lot and never have problems. Like you said tempura is mostly cooked but is mostly cooked good enough for you? It's just one of those things that you have to weigh the risks.

It's just like everything with pregnancy what is the risk and is it worth taking that chance.

I've been dying for Sushi too but I always eat the Tuna and Salmon rolls which are completely raw. I choose not to 9 months really isn't that long.
On the other side I haven't given up my Mt. Dew which has a ton of caffeine in it. I have limited myself to one a day except on fri and sat nights when I work at the bar then I drink two.
