My only advice is make sure you midwife is competent! Really do some research on her. I have read too many scares that put a black mark on midwives and homebirths. The mws here are regulated by the gov, so they have to be very competent. They also don't take ANY risks. Breech babies, cord prolapse, pushing too long, any sort of fetal distress its a straight hospital transfer. I'm less than 5 min from the hospital so I felt very comfortable having a home water birth. Had an amazing one with my son, and due in 12 days and planning for a second one. The water is soooo wonderful, but I still lost it in transition ;) nothing can compare to the empowerment of having a natural birth, but remember a healthy baby is the most important thing. Good luck momma!
I wanted a home water birth but my insurance doesn't cover it. So I was going to go to a birthing center but the only one is over am hour away. But I switched to a midwife after watching it and I'll be having a natural hospital birth that allows me to do it as I want. There's all kinds of great natural things you can do.
Thanks ladies. I know I havnt done much research but I'm defiantly look into it more. I'd rather be more calm I tend to stress out a lot and I hate hospitals more than anything!
All babies are born blueish. I am having a home water birth. They are safe. And help with pain and tearing. My mother in law had them and said she had no pain. I love that movie. Pain is also caused by fear and tension, so of course u are less relaxed in hospitals so it will be a little more painful.
Babies are born with the dive reflex, to hold their breath underwater. Most babies lose it after a few months. The above poster is also correct, they won't even attempt to breathe till they are well out of the water. It is perfectly safe. Unless you are high risk there is no need for continuous fetal monitoring. Water births are great for natural birth! Many hospitals and birth centers have tubs or pools. Look into it!
It's not like the baby came out under-oxygenated or anything. Babies aren't even designed to take their first breath until the umbilical cord makes contact with the air. I'm sure your sister in law's baby is very healthy. :)
Water labor is safe but it's just been studied that it is not safe during birth. My sister in law had it and rants and rave about it but her little boy came out blue. It make it difficult to observe the babies condition.
