Water Breaking

I need some information about what to expect when my water breaks. I  was wondering what to expect. How am I supposed know when it starts? what does it feel like or if I can even tell the difference between having to pee or it?

Mine was just a big gush. No pops, no trickles, just a gush of water. It was like I peed without having to pee. No pushing or anything.

Mine was a big gush and I would sit on the toilet until my ride came to get me and it would slow down a bit but every time I would stand up to try to pull my pants up it would come pouring out again and would not stop until I sat down again.

My amniotic fluid didn't stink either. I had been in labor for twelve hours and I felt a big gush. I thought I was peeing on myself but I couldn't stop the flow, so I knew it was my water. I've heard that most of the time the water doesn't break until late in labor, an a lot of times the doctor has to do it.

My water broke in bed both times.  When I stood up it continued with a steady stream.  Amniotic fluid does NOT stink as someone posted above.  My dr told me one way to help determine if you peed yourself or if amniotic fluid is leaking is to place a black towel underneath you because most times the amniotic fluid will have small white flakes in it.  Of course this isn't always the case so if you have any concerns you should go to L&D and be checked.

i never felt my water break

both times it happened in the middle of the night

first time i was past due and i woke up to a bed that was soaked!!! i stood up and felt like i could not stop peeing myself, called the doc who had me go to the hospital to get checked out asap and sure enough my water had broken

the second time....i was 8 weeks early and totally caught off guard....again, in the middle of the night i woke up and felt wet....i thought the baby was on my bladder and i peed myself so i changed myself and went to sleep on the couch....woke up shortly again and wet again...went to the hospital to check that everything was ok and a swab test confirmed i was leaking water

Mine was a pop with a gush, but I've heard of people that just had a slow and steady drip that lasted a couple of hours before the figured out it was the water and not urine.

If you water actually breaks it will most likely be a popping sensation followed by a gush or just a steady trickle that you can't stop.  If there is just a tear or hole it is really tricky to tell.  You may feel like you pee yourself a little here and there but it won't smell like urine.  You may just notice your panties are always wet.  If you are ever unsure, all it takes is  a trip to L & D for them to do a swab test to tell you if you are leaking amniotic fluid or not.

Sometimes it's hard to be able to tell the difference between water breaks and having to pee. Most water breaks arent like what you see on movies where it's a big ol' gush of water. It could be anywhere from a dribble to a feeling of peeing on yourself.

I do know that the smell of urine and the smell of amniotic fluid are completely different though, Amniotic fluid stinks. If you suspect a water break/leak, time your contractions and if they are anywhere from 2-5 minutes apart I would go to the hospital.

hope some of this helps..
