Ive been told day 1 is when you show any kind of "blood" whether it be spotting or not. Your period has officially begun and just because you havent been bleeding a full day does not mean your egg has not begun to break down.
i was told the same thing from a doctor as well no matter if it is spotting or not. that if you spot or flow is the first day.
Here it is, at the very beginning of that article, from a doctor's lips to your ears:
"When counting the cycle, the first day of blood flow is counted as Cycle day 1."
First day of bleeding is DAY ONE. Check this out:

It might have the information you seek. This is one of MedHelp's doctors.
My doctor said count the first day when your AF comes down heavy not spotting.
I always did it your way too till I started using the CBE Fertility monitor, and seeing a RE. He told me that you always count the next day as CD1. Even the monitor is set up to where you need to have a full day of FLOW not just spotting to be considered day 1. IDK though if it is that important, at most it will just add a day to your fertile window? But I am a normal 28-29 day cycle as well, maybe it is more important if you are not having normal cycles??
According to Fertility Friend, which was the website and charting program that I used, it said to count day one as your first full day of normal bleeding...Was it a full flow? If you were doing more than spotting, then I'd count it as day one...if you were just spotting at 10 p.m. I'd count friday as day one...
thursday is day one as long as it was before 12 pm that night.
