Where is baby sleeping for the first few months???

Hey ladies where are you having your babies sleep? We were going to get a crib for the nursery and a bassinet for our room for thr first couple months of life.  I told my MIL about our plans and she started talking about how horrible bassinets were and they were too frilly. Granted one of her granddaugters died at 2 months from SIDS so it is normal for here to be cautious. I just dont know what to do now, She said that shes had her other grand kids slleep in their car seats because sitting up would put them at less risk of sids. But isnt that bad or uncomfortable to put them in bed every night in a carseat? So what else would you put them in thats small and movable like a bassinet?

There are lots of varieties of you bassinets, not all are frilly. When my son was born I asked his pediatrician and he advised back sleeping, a fan in the room (the moving air will remind baby to breath), no pillows or extra things in bed, and a tight swaddle or sleep sack so that blankets will not cover face. It seems that constant sleeping in the carseat would not be good for developing spine.

Yes, the car seat is a VERY bad idea.

Hi both my children went in Moses baskets, at first, I had it on a stand by my bed so I could reach my baby easily, after a couple of months they went into a cot at the end of my bed, and they slept in my room for 12 months, I then moved the cot into there own room 6 months after they went into a bed. I have been told that putting a baby in a car seat for longer than 3 hours at a time can cause back and hip joint problems, and slow your child's development. X

I have never heard of people letting infants sleep over night in a car seat. That seems scary to me.

We used a moses basket for naps and a Arms Reach co-sleeper crib that attaches to the bed for night time. I like the co-sleeper and converts to a pack-n-play so you can use it for years. Plus you don't have to buy both a bassinet and pack-n-play...just the co-sleeper.

Muslin cloths I would use for over my shoulder while winding! They are a bit scratchy for using as blankets. They mop up liquid well though. I think they used to be used for washable nappies...my.mum tried to show me how to fold them for inside a nappy.

Cellular blankets we used. Lots of holes in and very thin :)

My son would ONLY sleep in his swing the first couple of months, this baby I will not start that, baby will be either in the crib, or bassinet!

My son slept in a bassinet for the first four months of his life, and then we put him in his crib in his room after that. We had the angelcare monitoring system in both places where he slept. I will tell you to not have your fan on with the monitoring system because does pick it up as fetal movement. My bassinet was anything but frilly. It was an Eddie Bauer basinett, and it didn't have any frilly, fruu fruu stuff I've seen on some.

I understand she's worries after that tragedy but It's actually dangerous for babys spine to have them in the carseat for more than two hours..and not very comfortable either. I had my baby in a Moses basket next to my bed. They don't know what causes Sids they just know what increases the risk ...sadly I think its one of those things that if its going to happen you can prevent it. You can reduce risk factors. I see no risks with a bassinet..just make sure there aren't blankets over baby that could go over babies head etc.. baby would be right by you too for peace of mind. I'm sorry to hear about the baby who passed away. X

My two boys slept in a bassinet the first couple months. They are fine and no problems. I plan on my lil girl sleeping in a bassinet as well the first few months before moving her to the crib.

What about a bouncer or a soft baby swing.

Whats the difference between a moses basket and bassinet? I thought moses basket was just the UK way of saying bassinet...like how we would never go out in public with just our pants on, cos our pants are our underwear!

Anyway, I will have baby in our room for the first 2/3 months in a moses basket, probably until he sleeps through the night. I never kept my other 2 in with me long as we always disturbed each other, but this wee guy is going to be sharing with his big brother when he leaves our room, so I will probably keep him until I am sure I won't have 2 kids wakening in the middle of the night! Plus I am hoping that maybe this time I can breastfeed so it will certainly be more convenient too.

if you want im sure the angel care monitor would work under the basinette matress.... if it does im sure that would make your MIL feel better... you will just have to remember to turn in on and off lol as im sure youll be reminded pretty fast if you forget to shut it off.... you can just turn the monitor that is hooked up to the sensor on without the monitor in your room on(the sound one) and it will alarm if there is no movement felt... so when you do have baby in their own room it actually beeps on both ends... so if you need to shut off your sound reciever for any reason the one in the room will still alarm... i like that feature! but it is very sensitive so just FYI when its windy out and my house vibrates a bit, it picks that up as movement.... i live on a farm...

That was my plan to put baby right next to me in the bassinet and use the angel care for the crib. I I told her that too. Ill show her that article as I didnt even think of putting her to bed in a carseat. I wouldnt do that but she says its safer. I guess shes just worried because of what happened to her grand daughter.

my daughter slept in the bassinette beside me and this baby is going to as well, when my daughter out grew her basinette i moved the crib in the room...but with this one im gonna use the playpen and i really hope he/she starts to sleep thru the night fast so i can move the baby to the same room as my daughter but in the crib...   as far as SIDS goes i didnt think basinettes were an issue? i would think that car seats would be worse just cause they can get so hot in them? and my basinette has mesh sides and lots of space around baby for air to move.... i read this just now looking for why not to let babies sleep in their car seats for long periods and i didnt look far so please dont angry(not saying you or anyone will but it happens lol) as i havent done much research into it but to me this one made sense
http://www.babycenter.ca/baby/safety/carseatsleepexpert/

So anyway im all for not risking SIDS and it does scare me lol but i think having baby right beside me is pretty safe?? i also have an angel care monitor that i use when baby gets to the crib...

I suggested a pack and play and she doesnt like them either and my fiance thinks that pack and plays are unsafe. Ill look into the moses basket I guess. I'm really disappointed about the bassinet being a bad idea. I know I dont have to listen, but now I'm all paranoid about it. Plus I agree that they arent all frilly they sell mesh ones. But my mom is purchasing the bassinet as a gift now do I tell her dont get it. Plus if they are frilly its on the outside not the inside of the bassinet. Now she has me worrying. I dont want to put a big crib in our room being that thats why she has her own room

I live with my mom at the moment til me & my bf get an apt, and our house is only 3 bedrooms, luckily mines is big enough to fit a crib and changing table in here, so my baby will be sleeping in his crib in my room til I move out, then it'll be in his crib in his own room. I also have the pack & play w| the bassinet part on top. if I didn't have money for the crib , he woulda been sleeping in that !
also, I can't even imagine how uncomfortable it would be for a baby to sleep in the car seat o_o

Both of my first children slept in a bassinet and they are perfectly fine...a fan in the rom that the baby sleeps in helps cut down on sids and so long as you are checking on baby and they dont have a bunch of stuff in their bed they should be fine. Their are many other ways to help prevent sids, just do your research. You could also use a wooden cradle with a cradle pad in it. But I have a bassinet for my now third child.

Mine all go straight in the crib in their own room. But if you want baby in your room maybe look into a moses basket, you can get a stand to sit them on and they are not frilly. There are also bassinets available that have mesh sides so they're safer.

Well...im a first time mom...so my thoughts could be wrong....but my sister had both of her children sleeping in the carseat for the first few months..and they both developed bald spots on the back of their heads...i may be wrong but I feel that is the reason why....and what im going to do...is buy only the crib(i dont see any difference between them and a crib) baby will be in my room for the first few months then we will get a bigger place so he/she can have their own room
