Zofran and birth defects

Hello mommies. Not to scare anyone at all but I just saw an ad stating that if you took Zofran during your pregnancy and your baby was born with a birth defect like heart problems or cleft palate/lip, then you may be eligible for compensation. This is just a informational post for any mommies who may be taking Zofran and also for mommies who took Zofran and gave birth to a baby with any defects.

I was prescribed zofran because I couldn't even keep water down my son hated food I guess lol but after taking it I was only able to keep yellow Gatorade and turkey broth down but after taking zofran I started having contractions all the time I was pretty much bedridden and my contractions got so bad I went to the hospital via ambulance @4am on Dec 5th 2015 & by 6pm later that evening my blood pressure skyrocketed and my babies heart rate dropped drastically and had to have an emergency C-section.... My due date: Dec 27th 2015

I had miscarriages my past 2 pregnancies.  I can't prove it was zofran related but I think so. Both occurred about a week after a started taking it. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I refused the zofran and so far baby is perfect.  I'm farther along than I have ever been also

Hi , I had my son back in 2006 . I had severe morning sickness and my DR prescribed zofran . I took it from the 2 nd month till birth , my son was born without a hand . I dont know if there is any connection between zofran and this deformity but just wanted to inform and spread awareness just in case .

I've taken Zofran from week 8 and still do. I'm 33 weeks. I take it maybe twice a week now. I was also in the hospital 3 times in the past two weeks. They gave me Zofran because the medicine they were giving me made me sick. No doctor is going to give you something that's going to harm your child. I see those commercials and ADs as a way for lawsuit firms to try and get people to sue so they can get money. Zofran is the number one medicine used for nausea in pregnant women.

I was on heavy dose zofran with this pregnancy for severe HG that required multiple hospitalisations. I refused to take it at first because I was worried for the first few weeks it would harm the baby. However I looked at every study I could find and spoke to numerous doctors, each said that there is zero proof Zofran causes birth defects such as cleft palate. Cleft palate/spina bifida etc is usually caused by low levels of specific vitamins in diets and the reason it has been found in women who have taken zofran is more related to the effects of HG such as the constant vomiting and inability to keep food down. This goes hand in hand with the weight loss. I started this pregnancy a healthy weight and have lost a drastic amount to the point where at 24 weeks I'm still not at my pre pregnancy weight. That is more dangerous to the developing baby than the zofran as no weight gain at a healthy/underweight bmi can lead to premature delivery or a low birth weight baby with low nutrition. I am off it now, as I am able to keep some food down but if I start being that ill again I will go back on it so that the baby gets what she needs nutrition and weight wise.

Any medicine poses a risk during pregnancy. That's why your suppose to weigh the risk and benefit. I was on Zofran both of my pregnancies until the end and have healthy smart kids. These commercials also go after popular medicines they know people use during pregnancy. Bc they know the chance is higher a child was born with an issue. I talked to my midwife and the doctor she's under after I seen that and they were not worried at all. It's pretty funny that they are just now linking it to any defects. The lawyers office is not a doctors office. And they tell you what they want. But any medicine can have effects during pregnancy. That's why you as the parent decide are you miserable enough to risk it. Don't let these commercials scare you like that. That's what they are trying to do.

Some doctors are unaware. And different doctors say different things, I've been perscribed acid reflux medication my whole life and my first two doctors said it was fine(which I didn't take it anyways) and my most current doctor told me it really isn't safe. I say doing some of your own research is always a good idea! Doctors don't always know! Pharmacists actually know ALOT more about the medication. Not to dis on doctors, but my family works in the medical field and my mom always complains about how people think doctors just magically know everything. Sometimes they have to research as well!

the only reason a child is born with a defect or disability is because of the combation of DNA strands that were mixed or missing not because of a pill

If you research it you will see it's not proven. Also you needed to take a certain amount of it. If you didn't over use it you will probably be ok also says it can only cause problems if taken before 10 weeks.

Your doctor wouldn't give you something that they didn't think was safe for you or your baby. There's other medicine they can give you for nausea but it'll knock ya out.
I asked my midwife and she said it was safe. And even then if you take it super early in your pregnancy,  it would be highly unlikely that your baby would be born with cleft lip/palate or a heart defect. She also said there was more advantages taking it, than disadvantages.
