I've lost 7 pounds since I've been pregnant due to the morning sickness and appetite loss, so my doctor prescribed me Zofran but I really don't want to take it. I'm sure y'all seen the commercials and I looked it up and it does cause those things. What should I do?

They tried to prescribe it to me when I went to the hospital due to severe vomiting I told them I didn't want that they asked why so I told them my opinion and they laughed at me and told me it wasn't true and not to believe every day I see on tv and so then I said still idc I refuse to take it and then they said the could prescribe me phenegren (promethazine) but it doesn't work as good as zofran but I refused and when she left I looked online. Zofran tablets for 20 is $760.00, and phenegren tablets for 20 is $160.00. It is all about the money!!!!

I had severe nausea during all four of my pregnancies and was only prescribed Zofran during my last pregnancy. My daughter was born with spina bifida and fused toes on one foot and several ear and skin tags. I was only taking prenatal vitamins and Zofran during this pregnancy. My daughter had to undergo spinal surgery at six months of age. She fortunately does not suffer the terrible heart defects some of the other unfortunate children did. I am devastated that this medicine was prescribed off label for pregnant women when it was NEVER approved!

Everything is recalled lately so honestly I wouldn't worry about anything! You could be drinking coffee every day of your life it one day they would recall it... Would you stop drinking coffee?? These commercials just advertise these things to make money. Don't worry about it

I agree with that :) she asked for different opinions so hopefully that's what we've given her

Like I mentioned it's a personal decision. I just put my opinion out there like everybody else...

I took two months of throwing up and struggling to keep water down as I didn't want to take zofran...The idea of it gave me huge anxiety, even though it hasn't been fully proved, the risk was too much for me to take, I lost 5 lb by the time I was 16 weeks...I'm now nearly 34 weeks and I'm up 40 odd lb, with a very healthy baby...its all about what risks you want to take, it's your choice..i would never judge you for it, just do some more research into how people think it can cause defects, as some of the findings are quite worrying

I think it's all about weighing up risks, if you feel you need it to keep your baby from missing out on nutrients then don't feel guilty for it, it's your choice...its scary that there are possibly unexplored risks of birth defects but at the end of the day its your gamble to take

That is not the reason why the commercial I did research and there's a lawsuit going on because of that it's as real as it gets I haven't even seen this commercial but I have read about it and my ob doesn't use it I asked
Good luck

Talk to your doctor half the woman on here aren't even in school

Doesn't mean they won't be healthy either..if it was that dangerous they would pull it off the shelf not keep using it. All a sudden a commercial wants to scare everyone. As I stated they could pick any medication and say it may cause birth defects because if you research a lot of basic medication could possible cause it all types of issues, then again so could breathing air, but most likely not.  Personal decision but I'm just saying let's be realistic.

Zofran is used on humans.  We have doctors for a reason.  They are the best source of information.  We haven't been through medical school or taken the oath that doctors take to do no harm.  So, I would always defer to my doctor and ask them all the questions that I have as they are in charge of my care.

To the poster, if you have concerns, do talk to your doctor about it.  He/she will provide answers that will help you either ease your mind or change to another medication to help with the issue.  Work with your doctor hon.  good luck

Why take a medicine while pregnant that was not tested on humans it doesn't say every signed person who takes it while pregnant will have a baby with a birth defect but while taking it in your first trimester it's risky plus it has never been tested for morning sickness just cancer patients and after surgery patients everyone is different just because your children are fine doesn't mean the next woman will have healthy children there is a risk plus again it's never been tested by the FDA for the treatment of morning sickness how about the woman who post this does her own research talks to her doctor and makes up her mind rather she wants to take that risk

Two children later, no issues having used Zofran.  :>)  Good luck and get your information from your own doctor.  That is your best source.

And Zofran has not been recalled. RECALL in the pharmaceutical world is something that doesn't mean what you think.  A drug recall doesn't happen because of a side effect.  It happens with a particular lot of medication (a batch of it) that had something like in shipping, it got too hot.  Probably didn't do anything to efficacy but there are strict guidelines that are followed.  A market withdrawal is when a drug is pulled from the market and that certainly is not the case with Zofran so the above information is incorrect.  good luck

Those issues are extremely rare and those ambulance chasing class action lawsuit commercials are problematic.  They give people the impression that the medication is unsafe.  Your doctor has taken an oath to care for you and do the best in terms of this.  Zofran is used by millions of people without incident (myself included).  I would not let tv commercials and a rare reporting of a side effect rule what you do.  Trust your doctor.  good luck

It's approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat patients going through radiation and/or chemotherapy, as well as post-operative patients who’ve had general anesthesia. Zofran has also been prescribed to treat pregnancy-related nausea (morning sickness), though ondansetron has never received FDA approval for this purpose.
