braxton hicks

I am 20 weeks preg with my 2nd child.  I have been having braxton hicks contractions now for weeks on and off.  They are more strong on one side than the other just like I had with my son.  I went into preterm labor with my first child.  My doctor says as long as it doesn't hurt, don't worry about it even though he admits it is too early for me to be having them yet.  Should I be worried?  I have tried to get pregnant for so long, I am just scared something will happen to my little girl now.

thanks for all the help. I do notice them more when I get tired.  Maybe I should just rest more.  I guess that I am just hormonal! LOL

BH can be uncomfortable but shouldn't be classified as PAINFUL. You can have BH as early as 6 weeks pregnant but it usually isn't noticeable until you are further along, in the 2nd, even 3rd trimester.

I didn't feel contractions with my first. But with my second daughter, I felt them all the time. It's normal!

sometimes you may  not even feel it really.. but your muscles in your uterus will just tighten up.. and you can feel it if you press on your belly... or if you have your hand resting there.
it's really not bad, so it's easy to not notice it, as well.

My midwife said yesterday that 5 or more BH in an hour is something to be checked out for. If you are getting them randomly, it really isn't a big deal. If you are getting them consistently, lie down on your left side and drink plenty of water. That should help!

I am 25 weeks now and started having some BH when I was 21 weeks or at least that's when I noticed it. I hear it is completely normal. I would say as long as you are not in any extreme pain or have bleeding, you should be fine. I just had another one a week ago. My whole stomach tightened up! Never felt anything like it before. But everything is fine. =) Congrats!!

yeah, why would he tell you it's too early? i've been getting them for a few weeks now and i'm only at 19 weeks. and mine seem to be more on one side as well, but i also realized that the baby really likes that side for some reason. so i think it's just because the baby is there. it's worse on my right side usually, and the baby seems to sleep there a lot. sometimes i have slight pains with mine.. just little twinges.. i don't think he should have said that really, probably just made you worry more. >:( but just because you went into preterm labor the first time doesn't mean it will happen again.
:) i hope everything goes perfect for you. congrats on the halfway mark! woo

Hi,

BH are normal, they can start as early as 7 weeks, they did with me.

Try not to worry, it's all very normal.
