I had this problem since I started taking pre-natal vitamins.  I even switched to a kind that wasn't supposed to be as bad  and it didn't make any difference.  I had to take stool softeners almost every day.  For me, no amount of water helped but if I drank alot of orange juice and eat alot of fruit, it did help a bit.  The pharmacist and doctor assured me that stood softeners were safe though.  I also find the omegga 3's seemed to help a little too.

Try not to strain when you go.  Use suppostories if you have to but don't strain too much.  It was 4 - 5 days at a time before I was going at first, the stood softener every day helped alot.
