craving mayjane

Ok, this is going to sound very bad,  it I don't want any abuse or critism I already know the risks but before I knew I was pregnanti smoked weed, and once I found out I quit cold turkey I'm now 17 weeks and I'm craving to smoke no matter how much I try not to think bout it n do something else it still comes to mind. How bad would it be if I smoked a little bit?

Here's the catch....you're both right about the drug testing. You have to consent. But...usually the consent is hidden in the fine print of your papers that you sign when you are admitted...so...if you see "I consent to any tests that my doctor deems necessary for my health or the baby's health"...that includes drug tests.

Not all hospital WILL test, but almost all hospital WILL get your consent for it in your admittance paperwork. And the same with your OB - you may not be consenting with each drug test, but most likely when you filled out paperwork to become a patient, you were consenting to testing.

So no, they cannot test you without your knowledge. But if you signed papers allowing your doctor to run necessary tests, you DID consent, even if drug tests are not specifically mentioned.

I personally wouldn't smoke during pregnancy, ANYTHING, because anything that you're inhaling that is not oxygen is going to deprive the baby of oxygen. However, it's a personal choice and none of us can make it for you - you will make the decision, and you will live with the consequences either way (either you smoke and run the risk or you don't smoke and live with the cravings)...so it's not really anything that any of us can tell you what to do.

Yes, where I live here in California, they can. And do.
My mother works as a nurse and, unfortunately more than you'd think, children get taken away from their parents because of drug use.
Even if they are not allowed, its still not worth it!
I don't see the point of arguing, when smoking while pregnant is just selfish.
Like I said, the baby can't go somewhere else when you're making horrible decisions...
People are going to do what they want though, which isn't my concern. I just feel real bad for your baby if you do continue to smoke.

Different hospitals have different policies and guidelines. The hospital I deliver at does mandatory drug testing on all babies, while others do not. However, this is not the question that was asked by the poster and is irrelevant.

In regards to how bad it would be to have a little, this also depends on your own point of view. I personally find that any amount is too much, and there is no reason you should. You would never give a child it when they're born, nor would you sit and blow it in their face. In essence, smoking while pregnant is no different. Weigh the pros and cons and see if it's really worth it to you. It doesn't matter if it's better than doing harder drugs, fact of the matter is it is STILL a drug (regardless of how 'natural' it might be) and can still affect the child, same as it does the mother.

Mrs. bagz, maybe where you are from they can test without youre knowledge but it is illegal  here unless they have reasonable suspicion that you or youre child are endangered. I worked in a ob gyn office for 9 years, I know what they can and can't do. Plus, I smoked my entire pregnancy last baby because of a chronic illness and was not once tested at the dr or the hospital. So no, I'm not wrong.

I get it really i do. I smoked for 13 years. I didnt smoke when i was pregnt with my first child but kick up again when i had her. My husband didnt smoke. He would take care of baby when i did it an i went away from them. I didnt stop again untill 2 years ago an i do think bout it every once n a while but would never go back. I can tell u ms bagz is right i was so selfish with my first child an she did sufr. I wasnt the mom i should have been. I will never go back an i will spend the rest of my life showing my oldest how i can really b. My second child is one i quit smoking to get pregnt wit her an did get prego a few months later. I wish u the best but please remember just one small side effct of weed is u forget alot. You can never get years back an no one wants to forget things about thier child an if u smoke after they r born u will take away from them an u will forget. It dosnt come back when u stop it just gets better. Please put your kids first they are so great an u will think so much more of them if u are sobr. Its hard but u can do it goodluck!!

The hospital absolutely can test without consent and knowledge... And did you know your ob sometimes even tests?!?!
They don't need your permission at all.
And that wasn't meant to be a 'scare tactic.'
Its just the truth.

Just a side note, the hospital can not just test you or baby for drugs without your consent and knowledge. Thats not a valid scare tactic.

I agree with mrs_bagz....and MsKitty. You never know what exactly is in it and nothing is worth the risk to your baby. I hate the idea of having to take Tylenol for this cold I have.
And it's true...you say you don't plan on smoking in your third trimester, but you probably didn't plan on smoking in this one either so you might just tell yourself "one more time won't hurt". The more you do, the harder it will be to stay away.
I think the best thing you could do is busy yourself with something else when a craving comes up. Try and keep your mind off it.

That's true, it's very common that something else gets mixed in these days.

I've been dealing with severe asthma this entire pregnancy, trying everything and going to specialists to make sure this baby gets the oxygen she needs, so it's hard for me to imagine somebody voluntarily smoking anything and risking that to their baby. You're lucky, your baby's oxygen supply is not limited unless you make it so. I know it's hard to give up addictions, but if you've been successful so far, hang in there for the sake of your little one.

One other thing to think about. Unless you're growing your own and have total control over the process, you cannot be completely sure that it's "only" marijuana going into your body. Pot contaminated with cocaine, meth and other hard drugs is very, very common and could cause severe pregnancy complications.

Even if the doctor recommends it for morning sickness, (which is highly unlikely because there are so many other remedies) the hospital can still take action once many is born and turn your case into cps.
Now, I have smoked weed for over 11 years every single day for medicinal purposes. I live in California where medical marijuana is legal (for now.)
I quit completely the day I found out I was pregnant. Before I got pregnant, I didn't think anything would ever make me quit. When I thought about having a baby, quiting wasn't in my mind at all.. I planned on continuing to smoke.
But that changed when I started working in a medical marijuana facility. There was this one pregnant woman I will never forget. She came in every day buying and smoking. For some reason, even though marijuana was all I cared about, it bothered me so bad.
Then I got pregnant. I had to quit.
Ill admit, at first it was extremely hard to do.. but im telling you, its possible.
I ended up getting engaged to the owner of this medical marijuana facility and I was around it everyday. I was around people smoking.. and sometimes at first, I craved it.
7 months later, it baffles me. Its not worth any kind of complications to my baby. I have done my research as well.. and knowing it has no proven side affects, I still couldn't do it.
It is a selfish thing to do while pregnant. When you smoke, it cuts oxygen going to the baby. Unfortunately for baby, your body is the only place it can go to grow and stay healthy. It doesn't have a choice to go somewhere else when you're making selfish decisions..
And I know you say "I wont do it everyday, just once or twice until my third trimester"..
but there's the problems.
First, for Babys health, you can't smoke everyday anyways.. so why tease yourself and make it harder to quit in the long run?
And second, the first two trimesters are critical for Babys growth and health... Quiting the third trimester isn't for Babys sake.. you're doing that so you wont have cps looking into your case. Which is down right selfish.
Im not talkin down on you at all..
im just advising you that it isn't worth it..
Marijuana, sadly, was the center of my world before I got pregnant.. and if I can quit cold turkey, I know you can too.
You just have to put Babys needs before yours. Which you should start getting used to doing now, because once baby is here, that's all you'll be doing hun.
You are going to be a parent. It's no longer about you.. but about the well being of your child..

Yeah I'd check into your state laws. The friend I mentioned was a registered patient and had a doctor who recommended it for morning sickness. Just be aware of the legal risks, and the limited info available re MJ and birth problems. I don't personally recommend it, but then this is just one of many decisions you'll find yourself making as a mother.

Yes I know people who smoked every day during there pregnancy and there children came out perfectly fine, I'm not going to do it daily and I don't plan on doing it after my third trimester starts or even after this time mayb but yes I do know the risks of it being found in my baby, but it should be out by the time I go to labor, in June. And but we do have medical mj here. I'm not signed up for it altough I could be Haha

Well I would ask your doctor about ideas for dealing with this. I know a lot of marijuana smokers claim it's not addictive, chemically speaking, but anything you're used to doing routinely becomes a habit that is tough to break over time.

One of my friends has two little ones. She smoked a TON of pot through both pregnancies, and I know she was still doing it after the kids were born. Both children appear to be perfectly normal with average or even above average intelligence, but honestly they are so young that it's hard to say how it will work out once they hit school age. Marijuana is natural, yes, but that doesn't guarantee that it's safe for pregnancy. Like any other medicine or herb, it's all in the dose.

You may also want to consider your location and the legal implications. I live in a medical-MJ friendly state. If you don't, or even if you do but aren't registered as a qualified patient, it's possible you could get into serious trouble if drugs are found in your system. Social services gets called in for this sort of thing all the time, and if you're caught breaking drug laws, I suspect you could face losing your baby.
