My mother's was more anxiety issues than depression and back then (the 70's) she thought she was just crazy or something and didn't talk to her doctor.  There's so much more information and treatments available to us now!  She would get the panic attacks where it's hard to breathe, you feel like you're smothering, you feel like you're losing control of your mind, etc.  So, yeah, it was pretty bad.  I'm not sure how long through her pregnancy she had that.  She still deals with it rarely, but not very often.  She prays a lot and God has helped her.  She's learned how to recognize when she is starting to feel stressed and take steps to deal with it then rather than letting it build up.  For instance, she will write down on paper the things that are troubling her mind.  (Which is a great idea at night when things are swirling in your head and you can't sleep.  You can just write them down and deal with them tomorrow!)  Myself, I can be a worrier sometimes; I have had some times when I have had to deal with some stress, nothing like hers, though.  I did have one really bad spell after my m/c and I was dealing with all the grief and everything.  Overall, I am more like my dad, though.  I don't feel like her having issues like that during her pregnancy made me any different than I would have been anyway.  We all have things we have to deal with, but we can overcome them with God's help.  In my opinion, your child still has just as good a chance as anyone's.  And don't forget, you really might feel better if you talked to your doctor about it.

Being emotional and having mood swings can be normal.  My mother had anxiety attacks when she was pregnant with me.  I think it has a lot to do with our changing hormones.  However, this is probably something you should discuss with your doctor because they can prescribe something mild that can help you, especially if the depression is hard to deal with, intense, interfering with your daily activities or anything like that.  I don't know very much about the effects to the child, but I think this is a common problem in pregnancy.  Try to relax as much as possible.  Best wishes!
