getting the baby to move

The baby has been sitting on my sciatic nerve and it causes an awful pain down the right side of my backside. The doctor said all I can do is hope the baby moves off the nerve. So my question is, is there anything I can do to prompt the baby to move off the nerve? Lying on my sides makes it worse.

If you lie on your side, let's say your left side, bend your right knee and put your right foot in front of your left knee (or higher if it will go that far). Push back on your bent leg until you feel the stretch in your hip/rear upper thigh area and hold it there for a few seconds, then repeat. I have sciatica from a pre-pregnancy lower back injury, and that's one of the stretches the physical therapist showed me that I can still do while pregnant.  I do it every morning on both legs before I get out of bed.

If it gets really bad, see if you can see a physical therapist. They can do wonders; if mine gets bad during this pregnancy I'll definitely be knocking at their door.

Try to keep pressure off that nerve when you sit because that's one of the biggest things that flares it up, I sit on a balance ball at my desk at work and it's great. It also helps to stay active...in my case the p.t. told me that the best way to reduce back pain is to strengthen the muscles around your back that support it...abs, glutes, etc. So I try to walk on a treadmill for an hour a day as much as I can. I also just took up prenatal yoga, which really helps with strengthening and stretching in a safe way for pregnant women. It's one of my biggest concerns about the pregnancy, will my back hold up, so though I'm only 15 weeks I'm doing everything I can to get strong enough to carry this baby with as little pain as possible. So far it hasn't been bad, especially with the stretching and yoga.

Oh thank you. I'll definitely try that today. If it gets much worse I'll have to go see someone.I thought it was early as well, but there's no doubt that's what it is. I'm also the only one in my family to experience nerve pain. Lucky me.

I'm 17 weeks. The pain started around 13 weeks. It does not hurt all the time, but it is getting to be more often.

I have the same problem! The pain is awful. And the more I stand or walk makes it worse. Sleeping on my back hurts too and can't even turn. :(
