high HCG but no visible sac on 5 wk u/s

I went to my fertility dr today and had a ultrasound to figure out how far along i am.
I am measuring at 5 weeks but he said he can't see the baby and that it probably isn't developing??? is it normal not to see anything. My HCG levels today are 20,965  it jumped form 9415 in 3 days so they are climbing. I'm really worried. this is my first pregnancy and want everything to go as smooth as possible.
Anything that might help would be great

Well they saw the placenta but he could see the baby inside the placenta so he said he doesn't think it's developing but if you look at my U/S you can definetly see something there

At 5 weeks you wouldnt see a placenta yet.your levels are high.which could indicate a multible pregnancy although at 5 weeks with levels like that they should have seen a gestional sac.when levels reach between 1000 to 2000 they would see somthing granted it would just look like a dot to the eye,but a trained sonographer would see this.since we have suffered infertility,and had many early scans.we have seen all these.have they discussed the possibility of an eptopic pregnancy.im glad your having another scan on the 2nd,somtimes its just a caes of being so small hard to see.I wish you the best of luck.

Are you five weeks by your date calculation or is that what they said based on the sono or both? Five weeks is too soon to see the yolk sac or fetal pole. My ob did the ultrasound himself and said i look 5-5/12 weeks and no yolk sac or heartbeat would be expected at that point so I'm going back on aug 27th for a repeat. Don't worry about not seeing the yolk sac yet. My hcg is on the high side ike yours and I haven't found a good reason for it except molar pregnancy, but then its supposed to be way high in the 100,000's, or multiples which would be ok. Not sure what else would cause it to be higher than expected but I'm trying to research it. Will let you know what I find.

The Dr saw the Placenta but he couldn't see the yolk sac or fetal pole that is why he told me that he didn't think that it was developing. I have another ultrasound on the 2nd of sept and a different dr's appointment with acutal OB on the 1st so hopefully it was just to early to see anything

I was looking at this table which is less specific, it is by week, not by day. Its ranges seem to be lower for 5 weeks than the babymed table. Everything I've read said the ultrasound is way more accurate than hcg by the time you can see the sac, so I guess that's what's important, but the waiting is terrible.

Guideline to hCG levels during pregnancy:

hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age)* :

    * 3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
    * 4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
    * 5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
    * 6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
    * 7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
    * 9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
    * 13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
    * 17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
    * 25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml
    * Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml
    * Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml

Thanks for your response!

Here is a very similar one..

A high level may also indicate that your conception date was calculated incorrectly. It may also mean that you have a multiple pregnancy (twins) or even that you may have a Molar Pregnancy.

Hi, almost the same thing happened to me today. I had an ultrasound that showed I am about 5 1/2 wks, then i got my hcg drawn and was 11,000. All the charts I've seen say 5 wks should have a max hcg of 7000 so am worried about what the high hcg means. They saw a gestational sac but no yolk sac or fetus yet.

Anna, we didn't see a fetus yet and the ob said this normal and usually seen btw 5.5 and 6.5 wks and a heartbeat not until 6.5-7wks. My concern for you and I are the high hcg's compared with the date given by ultrasound. Have you been able to find any more info about it?

anxiouslywaiting where did you find that chart? i would love to see the original and any information that came with it.

Don't mean to scare you but that sounds REALLY high for 5 weeks...I think you are supposed to see something if your hcg is over 5000 but i'm not a Dr.  l Hope everything turns out great and congrats on getting pregnant.
