Most jobs in the US do not offer or give paid time off when you have a baby. FMLA I believe grants you 12 weeks off, but this is also unpaid. To get pay you would have to use a combination of time off.
I'm in the U.S., in a professional career, but my maternity leave is unpaid. I have to take all my sick leave before I can use it, and that's paid, and if I have to stay home after that I have to resign from my position. This is one of those moments I'd definitely rather be in Canada.
In Canada its also 1 year paid. Not %100 of your wages If I recall its %55
I'm taking my vacation and sick leave probably a week before my due date. (I did that with my first son) I have about 6 weeks of that accrued so far. I get about 3 hours each a pay check. my maternity leave will kick in after that and it's 12 weeks unpaid. my company requires to return to work within the week of your maternity leave ending or your position is considered you have quit. I dont think there are programs that would allow you to stay home longer because time off is what your company policy is if your wanting to keep your position, but thats my state. Congrats!
Back in 2004, my job gave me a %age of my pay for 12 wks..not sure how it would work now..??
I know in Canada you can take 1 year but I'm not sure for the US or anywhere else. Sorry I can't help more
