off the wall is this a good idea question...

I know this isn't entirely baby related but still looking for advise. So I have a large dog 95lbs and still growing that will be a year and a half when baby is born. Our roommate has a 2 year old dog that our dog has grown up with but he is moving out this month and we r talking about getting another large dog 130lbs and 10 years old so ours won't be lonely but also cuz he is sorta hyper and I think a older dog sorta his size would help calm him down.. am I totally crazy trying to take that on right before baby is born or do you think it would be good for the younger dog? They are actually father and son bull mastiffs... great dogs by the way :) any thoughts are welcome please.

I wouldnt, I have a dog who is 1 and ahalf, shes beautiful. Old dogs are grumpy, my girlfriend has one shes had since he was a pup. He recently snapped at her 4 yr olds face because he bumped him while he was playing. She didn't know wat to do as she loves this dog and it was really out of character for him to snap. Just an insight dogs can really harm a baby if they wanted to and you won't have had a chance to get to really know this dog b4 yr baby comes along.

I keep thinking about emergency situations with my dog. There was a time when I would have shelled out every dollar I had if I needed to for my dog if she got hurt or sick, but now I have my baby to consider. I had to take her to the doggy ER one night - we think she got some bug spray on her paws and then licked it off, but she wouldn't stop vomiting - and I left with the doggy equipment of pepto bismol and a thousand dollars less in my bank account. If they had kept her the night, it would have been even more. I'm going to check into pet insurance, but kids are expensive and pets can be expensive, and if you have two of them it doubles the costs.

The new one is used to little little kids but ya there is the cost of 2 dogs and 2 big ones is a lot of food.

By the way, I'm a dog person, absolutely love them and spoil mine like crazy, I'm just trying to answer you from a practical standpoint. Although I can rarely resist a cute one, I definitely wouldn't take a new one on right now.

I wouldn't. Dogs, especially new dogs in your household are a lot of work, and you know your dog's temperment but you can't guarantee that the other dog will be good with the baby. Maybe he'd calm down yours, but maybe he wouldn't. I know people who've gotten an extra dog thinking just that, but it didn't work and then they have the energy and cost of two dogs, not just one.
