I'm assuming you are pregnant if posting on this board. When you ovulate, your ovary releases an egg and once the egg is fertilized and implants, that follicle sustains the pregnancy by releasing hormones until the 2nd trimester where the placenta picks up. What can happen is the follicle (the corpus luteum) can fill with fluid or blood and become enlarged (cyst), this is very common in early pregnancy. Most range from 2-5 cm and disappear or shrink around the 2nd trimester when it stops sustaining the pregnancy or disappear all together by the time of birth. Ovarian cysts are common, most women get them every cycle when ovulating, however they remain very small and usually burst on their own without them knowing.

The risks are minimal until the cyst gets larger than 8 cm. After 8 cm you run the risk of torsion, where the cyst twists the ovary and cuts off blood supply resulting in extreme pain and it is an emergency in order to save the ovary. Also at this size, if it happened to rupture, it would be large enough to cause a decent amount of free fluid and you will also be in extreme pain and run the risk of infection.

However, corpus luteum cysts rarely grow that large. I have one that was found at 3.5 cm and my ovary was hemorrhaging into the cyst causing pain, but the pain disappeared. It is now around 5 cm, but my doc just monitors it every 3 months. Overall, the corpus luteum cyst should not cause you problems other than a little twang of pain here and there if you happen to twist weird or put a lot of pressure on it at 5 cm. I've had various types of ovarian cysts for 8 years, some a lot more serious than others, over 20 in total and I have never had torsion. My frist was 10 cm and ruptured, but that was an emergency case, all my others have been monitored just like yours.

So don't worry, it's normal to have a cyst in pregnancy and I hope my explanation has helped some :) Your doc will most likely just monitor them at each u/s.
