question about heart beat

is it possible to have twins but only hear one heart beat at first appointment. and not know until 20 weeks when you get your first sonogram?

Yes, it is very common.  My friend did not find out about her twins until her 20 wk scan.  They say it's difficult to tell the difference between the two heartbeats when just using a dopplar b/c many times the heartbeats are in sync.

I would think so, because once they find one heartbeat, why would they go looking for another?? = )
