Before a doctor will suggest a leave of absence from work due to severe morning sickness, he/she will prescribe Zofran or a similar prescription.  You're not considered to have severe morning sickness until you're unable to keep solids and fluids down for more than 24 hrs.  If this doesn't describe your symptoms, your doctor may suggest a number of things such as 50 mg of vit. B6 twice daily (in addition to your prenatal), SeaBands worn at the pressure points of your wrists, 5-6 small meals throughout the day, drinking and eating separately, and taking benadryl in the evenings.  As in my case none of these worked and by the 11th week I was prescribed Zofran (expensive and insurance covers only a small amount, but I was willing to fork it over to feel better).  Hope this is helpful and that you feel better soon!

I too have been very sick with this pregnancy and have considered taking time off.  My sickness is isolated to the end of the day, however.  So since I'm able to keep my food down in the morning, my doctor won't prescribe me Zofran.  I'm at the 12 week mark and my sickness doesn't start until I get home from work now, so this is easier, at least for work.  I'm still basically useless at home!

Call your HR department and see what their policy is on Short Term Disability.  Also call your doctor and see if they can prescribe something like Zofran for you.  Personally, I would rather take my time off after the baby is born rather than before.  You may be limited on how much paid time you can get.  Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

I think I was out the majority of my first trimester due to nausea! When I finally was able to see a doctor she prescribed me Zofran which turned everything around for me! the generic version is cheaper and works the same. I dont know what I would've done without it and highly recommend it! :)
